They are for folding bikes, mostly, but would work on a unicycle.

Not sure if this is awesome or just desperate?

Unless you're being followed by a conga line of fancy poodles there is quite literally no reason for a unicycle. Not ever.

It's not like it's light and easily portable, store-able at work or in other buildings, relatively inexpensive compared to a full bike, easy to carry up skinny rowhouse stairs to a fourth-floor apartment, allowed on the T anytime, requires no handlebars so one can simply hold groceries, hones one's balance and heaven forbid.... fun.

I'm not saying there are no downsides as well, but I kinda wish I was that guy.

...that one wheel with no brakes in this weather is anywhere near a good idea.

I'm sure he gets the attention he craves though.

First, it's a 1:1 geared wheel. You only go as fast as your feet can spin in a circle while attached to your knees. In other words, you're not going to get moving any faster than you could have walked/run anyways. Second, if you need to stop in an emergency, you stand up. The seat will slam the ground (they're reinforced if they're not solely for stage use) and it will maybe slide about 6 inches to a dead stop on its side.

In the snow, you're definitely at a greater risk of the wheel sliding sideways out from under you, but probably not a worse probability than losing your feet in the same conditions.

This is actually the perfect weather to learn how to unicycle. If you eat shit you'll most likely fall into a snowbank rather than hard concrete.

I will never be a unicyclist but it never fails to make me laugh with delight when I see someone riding one. Just fun and thrilling, I imagine.

If it doesn't come super naturally to you, then the weeks of practice make you want to kill something. Nothing feels more annoying than knowing what you want to do and convincing the wheel to do it without simultaneously tossing yourself off the wheel over and over again.

But once you can do it, it's definitely fun.

I've seen a guy on the Minutemen riding a unicycle with what looked to be like training wheels... so a tricycle. Looked awfully stable though slow. People get super-serious with their unicycles

I think it's a universal truth that pictures of babies are dumb to all except their mothers.

Making an all-caps comment on the internet screaming that someone who is literally bringing home the bacon on a unicycle is only doing it for attention. More than a little silly don't ya think?

If you can learn to balance on a bicycle, you can learn to balance on a unicycle. And as another reply said, they're even more space-efficient than a bicycle, so why not?

No reason at all to ride a unicycle - except for fun.

Haven't learned, yet, but learning to ride one is on my bucket list.
