Lawsuit: Car dealer's service department to blame for fire that damaged two Waltham condos

The insurance company for a Waltham condo trust has sued car dealer Herb Chambers, charging a sloppy service job on a BMW led to a garage fire that damaged two condos.

In the lawsuit, filed in US District Court in Boston yesterday, Strathmore Insurance Co. alleges that the service department at Herb Chambers of Sudbury didn't properly re-install the valve cover of a customer's 2011 BMW X5, which caused the engine to burst into flames moments after he pulled into his garage at 15 Kings Way on Dec. 17 of last year.

The improperly installed valve cover allowed oil to leak on the hot engine block, which ignited.

Strathmore, which also named Chambers's insurance company, is seeking repayment of the money it paid to the condo trust to repair the damage from the fire - plus additional penalties and lawyers' fees. The company says Chambers's insurance company refused to pay out on its request.

The suit does not mention a specific amount, but it has to be at least $75,000 to warrant a federal suit.

Almost every time I look at this page, the UHub automated ad server comes up with an ad for a Herb Chambers dealership...

Porsche ads. At least those don't require a botched service job to suddenly burst into flames.

Valvoline Instant Oil Change once turned me away because they were out of the type of oil my car needed. When I went back in a few days, they discovered they'd left the oil fill cap off, and oil was all over the engine. They sort of cleaned it off using windshield washer fluid.

Some months later, my car was totaled in an engine fire.

Related? Who knows. But I do know I'll be checking the cap after every oil change going forward.
