Making Boston a garden city

The Christian Science Monitor introduces us to the Boston Food Forest Coalition, which is busy building a new type of community gardens in Boston:

Each garden will host a panorama of food-producing plants, including trees and shrubs to mimic woodlands. The BFFC also aims to “revive and conserve” old, neglected city apple orchards.

There was a non-profit, Earthworks in Roxbury, that spent about 25 years going around doing the Johnny Appleseed thing -- planting fruit trees (tiny saplings for the most part) around Boston, Cambridge, Somerville area. It takes a while for fruit trees to get to the point of bearing usable harvests and unfortunately Earthworks went under just about the time they could have literally reaped the fruits of their labors. Hopefully folks involved in this effort can build upon what Earthworks started.
