Isn't this sort of thing why the city has a legal counsel on staff? Sounds like Walsh doesn't think much of the lawyers on the city payroll and really wants to cover his ass. At added expense to tax paying residents of course.

because if you use the city's attorney for the investigation, no one will trust the results if they clear City Hall. You need someone without pre-existing ties.

... To clear City Hall.

How is paying an outside attorney to investigate and different than paying an inside attorney to investigate? Both attorneys are on the payroll one way or the other.

The feds are looking into the matter on their own. The only reason for doing this is a preemptive defense against potential indictments of staff. It's less damaging politically if the law breaking people are outed or fired before the feds show up with arrest warrants

The Globe reported the Mayor plans to claim attorney client privilege and as such would not have to disclose the investigator's report. I don't know the merits but the intention is clear.

Walsh is shielding himself from the worst exposure. The guy who made the call was identified in the Globe and Walsh has not fired him. Walsh fired the I-93 protestor right off.

Walsh knows the man who called the Omni Parker house but he may not know whether the call was to inform or to pressure the Omni to cancel the Top chef thing, but in the end they did cancel the Top Chef thing. Given that they did, you have to ask yourself who the guy on the city payroll was working for Boston or unions.

And what was the tone? The guy could have meant two completely different things.

1. If you don't hire these guys, they will picket you. (The implication is that he is assisting in the shakedown.)

2. Look, guys, I have heard that the Teamsters are planning on picketing the location, so you might want to change it. (The implication is that he heard something embarrassing is about to happen and is looking to help the victims of the shakedown.)

Sure, you show him the door for the first one, but you give him a pat on the back for the second one. That's why you have an independent investigation.

I am curious how blocking the expressway during morning rush could be anything other than blocking the expressway during morning rush, but I am open to hearing a different version of that.
