MBTA restores Orange Line service to Forest Hills; Red Line to JFK/UMass

The Orange Line is running between Sullivan and Forest Hills this morning. It's still limited bus service between Sullivan and Oak Grove, though.

Same basic idea on the southern end of the Red Line: It's buses all the way down past JFK/UMass.

This is kind of like getting a present on Christmas from your Mom which you picked out, showed it to her, told her when the store was open, what size it was, ended up driving her to the store, and then had to pay for it anyway because she didn't have enough cash and doesn't use credit because she is afraid of her credit rating being damaged. Yet she wrapped it up and said Merry Christmas to you when you opened it.

Thanks Mom, I mean Mass. General Court and Govs. Weld, Celucci, Swift, Romney, and Patrick.

Small nitpick, but technically under state law, when a Governor vacates the office mid term, their lieutenant Governor only becomes ACTING Governor. I know, I know. Small nitpick, like I said, but if it can keep us from ever having to refer to Jane Swift as "Governor" I'm all for it.

The constitution never refers to an acting governor, but rather decrees who shall " perform all the duties incumbent upon the governor, and shall have and exercise all the powers and authorities, which by this constitution the governor is vested with, when personally present."

Standing in the 100 person crowd awaiting the never-gonna-come 39 Bus at Forest Hills, I was grateful for the announcement of this "gift." Even got a seat. Thanks Mom!

I was pleasantly surprised that the Orange Line was running from Forest Hills this morning.

Then I was dismayed that having a usual train running was a pleasant surprise.

When we're finally back to just one or two broken-down trains daily, Adam posting rhyming headlines about each one, overcrowded platforms only for a couple hours a day, trains that look like cattle cars only a couple times a day, we're going to think we actually have the best, most functional transit system in the world.

More than 70 buses, including 40 Peter Pan buses, are shuttling passengers farther down the Braintree branch, said MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo. Nearly 50 buses, including ten from DATTCO, four from Bloom Bus, and two from Greyhound, are shuttling passengers along the Ashmont branch, he said.

Orange Line service was extended from Sullivan Square Station to Forest Hills Station. Nearly 40 buses, including 10 from Yankee Bus, are replacing rail service between the Oak Grove and Sullivan Square stations, Pesaturo said. – source

Now if only they weren't all stuck in traffic that would be great.

so that they don't have to wait for traffic?

But here we are, in the country where you're not a real person if you're not driving, so 50 people on one bus have to fight for space with 50 people in 48 cars
