Newton alderkockers to become city councilors

Village 14 reports the Newton Board of Aldermen has voted to transmogrify itself into the Newton City Council effective Jan. 1.
Ed. note: Boston had a board of aldermen - and a common council - until 1909, when a new city charter replaced both with a single city council.

Each ward used to have an elected representative in addition to at large city councilors elected by the wards. The mayor was much weaker. There was significantly more neighborhood level representation and responsibility of elected officials at a hyper local level compared to today. It was also harder for a small number of corrupt people to control the city against the wishes of the majority of the public.

Not so sure that worked in practice. Seems that there were scandals both before and after the change.
