Not usually a good sign when six firetrucks pull up at a T stop and firefighters head downstairs

Central Square on the Red Line right now is just full of Cambridge firefighters bearing hoses. There's a hazmat truck on Mass. Ave. A train in the station was evacuated. The T is warning of moderate delays due to "Cambridge Fire Department activity."

While reading the tweets, I found this guy's feed. A much more succinct and straight-to-the-point version of the MBTA's service alerts!

I got into Central Square around 7 pm, left it around 8:15 pm, and didn't see any of this.

Rear cars on the train shorted out a motor, producing some smoke. Train crew cut the motors which stopped the smoke. Cambridge Fire arrived to give their O.K. to move the train. After about 20 minutes from when the train first arrived, train was moved and service resumed.

What makes Massachusetts Bay think it's a Transit Authority?

I was on that train, after taking the shuttle from Quincy Center to North Quincy. We got to Central about 7:10 pm, and they just told us the shuttle was being taken out of service. After we were all out, they tried moving the train forward, but it only moved a few feet.

There hadn't been any further announcements by the time I headed outside five minutes later to see all the local fire engines pulling up. Waited by the courthouse for a bus or taxi, but they were all full. Ended up walking to Inman to be able to catch a taxi. Two hours to get from Quincy Center to Alewife. Good times.
