Olympics organizers talking to businesses that would have to move for stadium

At a City Council hearing today, Boston 2024 Richard Davey said he has finally begun talking to the owners of the food-processing businesses in Widett Circle, which would have to leave to make room for the "Midtown" stadium that would be one of the focal points of a 2024 Olympics in Boston.

Davey also told City Councilor Charles Yancey, who sees pretty much every public event as an opportunity to push for a high school in Mattapan, that, sure, maybe Boston 2024 could help him with that.

Davey said some of the Widett Circle business owners he talked to are actually looking for opportunities to expand and that finding a good location for them near a major highway could be a win-win for them and the Olympics, should the International Olympics Committee pick Boston in 2017.

His comments came after Boston 2024 majordomo John Fish called Widett Circle 85 acres of land that is "completely underutilized," which brought a rebuke from City Councilor Tito Jackson (Roxbury): "There are companies and businesses that are thriving in that area."

Even City Councilor Michael Flaherty (at large), who praised Fish as a great Bostonian who has showed "personal accountability and leadership" on the Olympics, urged him to be "sensitive" to the Widett issue.

As they have done at other meetings with Boston residents and officials, Fish and Davey said that, if nothing else, the Olympics can be a great spur to further investments in the sorts of things that would make Boston even more of a world-class city than it already is. Imagine, Davey asked, if Morrissey Boulevard were fixed or the JFK/UMass station underwent a major upgrade. Davey made his comments after Councilor Matt O'Malley (West Roxbury, Jamaica Plain) asked: "Why do we need the games to address the massive shortfalls in the MBTA [and housing shortfalls]?"

However, Davey acknowledged that the Boston Olympics bid relies only on transportation upgrades the state has already budgeted for, such as new cars on the Red and Orange Lines and the extension of the Green Line, but said he remains hopeful Boston 2024 could help spur spending on other enhancements.

"To be frank, some of those transportation ideas are not currently funded," he said. Among these: New ramps off I-93 to the proposed Olympic village on Columbia Point - which would go through land now owned by the Boston Globe, and which are shown on initial Boston 2024 plans. Davey said he is optimistic a deal can be struck with the Globe - or whoever buys the land - but acknowledged his group would have to talk to state and city officials about the project as well.

Fish said that after Boston won the USOC nods, the number of tweets that mentioned the city exploded. He predicted a similar global effect during the Games, which can only help increase Boston's exposure on the world stage and better help it in international commerce.

And when Jackson asked about whether funding to local non-profit groups would dry up as big corporate sponsors throw their money at Olympic sponsorships, Fish said, no, the opposite would happen: the Olympics "will open up the floodgates" for local non-profits when people around the world discover how awesome our local non-profits are.

Chris Dempsey, co-chairman of No Boston Olympics, said he and other members of the group realize that Boston can put on great Olympics. But he said the financial plan is still too tenuous and could leave taxpayers on the hook for overruns. He pointed to a $600-million payment from the International Olympics Committee to Boston - that he said would simply be turned over to the US Olympic Committee rather than actually be spent locally.

Davey said that's bunk, that all modern US Olympics games have ended up making money and that Boston 2024 has already bought insurance and is looking at other ways to protect both itself and the city from overruns.

Dempsey said that while the 1984 Los Angeles games did run a profit, they did so only after a significant overrun. And he noted the Los Angeles City Council had passed a measure barring the city from spending any money on the games. He urged Boston councilors to do the same.

Goodness gracious. We got mentioned on TWITTER? That's breaking into the major leagues. I've totally changed my opinion on Boston Olympics now. Tweets are, after all, fungible currency that we can use to oh god I can't even keep up this ruse why does this man still have the podium?

100 inches of snow got people on Twitter talking about Boston too. 2024 Olympics would create an even bigger mess of the city than the winter of 2015, with the added fun bonus of putting us billions in debt!

Most of the twitter chatter when Boston won the bid was people retweeting tweets from news sources. That doesn't mean they'd spend money here, it means they know Boston might host the games. People already know the summer olympics are held every four years. Some people like to travel far to attend, others will attend because they're close. Twitter has about nothing to do with how well attended the games would be or how much increased tourism we might experience before or after. If you want to know about that, read Bread & Circus by Andrew Zimbalist.

How many of those tweets were along the lines of "Oh crap, the Olympics better NOT come to Boston...."?

Boston's the "Birdman" of world-class cities. Now that we're hot on Twitter, let's take a run through the streets in our underwear, since the T doesn't work. Then, once shoot our own nose off with the Olympics, we'll be back in business, BABY!

It is essential that we have an accurate count of the twits who mention Boston in their tweets, and that we maximize that number. I certainly hope the Olympians have a plan for accomplishing this. Imagine the windfall of tweets that would result from a thoroughly botched Olympics!

How much closer to a major highway can you get that on I-93 and near I-90?

Also can I replace one of my elected reps with this Dempsey guy? He seems to actually like policy and working for the benefit of residents here.

I'm still on the fence on the whole Olympic thing. All in favor if they can convince me that it's not going to cost me anything. But where is all this magical money going to come from? We already know what's in the pipeline and just heard it will cost $7 billion to fix the T. My sources tell me that conversations with Republicans in DC have basically told Mass "wonderful - good luck with that Olympics thing" because a) the Republicans are in control and we only have Dems down there, b) there isn't a whole lot of discretionary money rolling around DC anyway and c) Republicans. So my question remains - even before we ask where all the venue money will come from, what are we going to get for the T? A new snowplow from FEMA? Maybe some window air conditioners because the Olympics is in the summer time?

OK - Mitt's a Republican. You can have a pool for his horse or something.

Show me the money how you plan on paying for all of these enhancements.

I really think I need a pair of these.. it's starting to get deep.

These guys are just throwing shit against the wall and seeing what sticks. You want a pool in Franklin Park? Sure. Beach volleyball on the Common? NO? Ok, that's out.

A new high school in Mattapan? Ya, we'll see what we can do, bud.

Boston 2024 will break more promises than a Mall Santa Clause.

The instant he started to speak at the hearing, I wondered how long it would be before he somehow managed to make it about his high school. Less than a minute, as it turns out.

A new high school with an olympic sized pool?

One of the issues with the Franklin Park pool is that nobody asked for it. They need it for the pentathlon, and they just figured people would be thrilled to pieces to have the thing left behind.

At a City Council hearing today, Boston 2024 Richard Davey said he has finally begun talking to the owners of the food-processing businesses in Widett Circle

Translation: They're making businesses a low-ball offer now, which they will then pretend justifies having their thug friends at the BRA take the land by eminent domain for pennies on the fair market dollar, which the BRA will then "sell" to the Boston2024 goons. "Hey, we offered them 20¢ on the dollar in 2015, it's not our fault they're getting 5¢ now. We tried to help!"

The IOC loves bulldozing peoples homes and businesses. Just ask the 30,000 people who were displaced in Atlanta.

as a resident of atlanta during this time.. honestly I thought you were full of it.

A Quick Google yields lots of results to support your claim.

Even as a resident at the time I thought most of construction was on parcels (ex-World's Fair) that were vacant.. apparently not.

Even more reason not to support this boondoggle.

The Olympics Village proposal would not only destroy their neighborhood supermarket, it would run from the old Bayside Expo Center down to BC High, i.e., completely block Mt. Vernon Street, which is the main way to get into and out of the apartments. But I'm sure UMass will build them an express lane through its campus so they're not trapped in their apartments for several weeks.

If the bid fails, they will still have this land, bought on the cheap, to sell to their cronies for cheap, so they can get very large payouts for "redevelopment".

Hey - NYC didn't even get their Olympic bid accepted, but still managed to evict and destroy a whole bunch of industrial businesses in favor of luxury condos with all the anticipatory rezoning and such.

Chicago's failed 2016 bid resulted in the destruction of a hospital and an airport, among other things. Olympic Fever leads cities to harm themselves, and it's not just the ones whose bid prevails that are damaged.

am I correctly understanding that the last time they can find an Olympics that led to a city making money was 30+ years ago?

I wonder what has changed since 1984 such that the host cities no longer make any money from the Olympics?

Let's get a bunch of space savers over to Widett Circle for the businesses. I've got a couple of folding chairs in the basement. Who's got some appropriated orange cones?

There are thriving business in Widett Circle. Maybe unglamorous in some eyes but these are the types of businesses that are the backbone of a local economy.

It makes me sad that wealthy Olympic-backers want to clear the space for their own egos and profits.

"under-utilized" to them means

"spot of land close to downtown that doesn't have luxury condos or high priced retail on it yet"

Lets see who can come up with the most ridiculous thing that the Boston 2024 people will promise to deliver if we support the Olympics.

So far we have new schools, will be swimming in tourist dollars, world stage fame, and a gold plated T with a shoe shine attendant in every car.

How about a puppy for every school child and a new car with an immovable space saver for every resident?

I am sure we can make them promise all sorts of crazy stuff that they have no intention on delivering.

New ramps off I-93 to the proposed Olympic village on Columbia Point - which would go through land now owned by the Boston Globe...

Now we know another reason why the Globe is in favor of it...

Not really. The off-ramps could be taken by eminent domain, and the globe could probably get more money for the land on the open market. Unless you think the off ramps will raise the value of the remaining land enough to make up for the difference.

Nobody is taking the Globe's land via eminent domain. Quit it.

It is status quo for the local Olympic committee to get state and local government to give these three authorities to the local Olympic organizing committee;

  • power of eminent domain
  • exemption from laws that govern land use review process and authorization
  • exemption from laws that govern environmental compliance

Using those powers correctly involves not using them on someone like John Henry, who can afford to tie you up in court until your grandkids die of old age. I guarantee you, trying to take anything from him by eminent domain will end very badly, with every condemnation proceeding attached to his lawsuit.

No, they'll just take from land owners who can't afford a protracted legal battle, and pay whatever price people like Mr. Henry name as a cost of doing business along the way. They're evil, after all. Not stupid.

What you say is true, but think about it. It's THE BOSTON GLOBE. Do you seriously think anyone who has to stand for re-election will cross them in such a hideous manner? Get real. It would have to be the idiot politician of all-time.
