O'Malley has at least one backer in bid for council presidency

Jamaica Plain News reports at-large Councilor Ayanna Pressley will vote for O'Malley (Jamaica Plain, West Roxbury) for council president to replace Bill Linehan (South Boston, South End, Chinatown, Downtown), who is not trying for a third term in the president's aerie above the council chambers.

Hannibal Lecter: "Plum Island Animal Disease Research Center." Sounds charming.
Clarice Starling: That's only a part of the island. There's a very, very nice beach. Terns nest there. There's beautiful...
Hannibal Lecter: [cuts her off] Terns? Mmm. If I help you, Clarice, it will be "turns" with us too. Quid pro quo. I tell you things, you tell me things. Not about this case, though. About yourself. Quid pro quo. Yes or no?

The quid pro quo is Michelle Wu backed Linehan last time and is now trying to become the president herself with the support of Linehan and the other conservatives. Pressley is backing O'Malley because he's an actual progressive unlike Wu.

I would like to see Wu with more public office experience before taking over. At least more than 20 months of total public office time

On the other hand they become deadened and less willing to change what needs change. Better to get newer Council Members to turn around what's bad, for example bad Records Management practices at Boston City Council/City Clerks Offices.

What are the actual duties and responsibilities of the Council President? Is it just to keep order during meetings, or is there more to it than that?

committee assignments, and becomes acting mayor if the mayor resigns (that's how Menino became acting mayor, before he ran on his own). Beyond being acting mayor if the mayor is out of town, I don't know the other duties.
