Back Bay nightmare on the Orange Line

Around 5:30 p.m. at Back Bay, Patrick Shea urged anybody considering the Orange Line to forget about it, as the T ran fewer trains on the line than usual due to snow-related whatevers.

Claire Blechman reports things weren't much better at North Station:

I came home a little earlier tonight. A Red Line train with plenty of room arrived right away at Kendall. I usually get off at Charles and walk up to Bowdoin, but it was so cold I decided to go to Downtown Crossing instead.

The Summer Street platform for the Orange Line to Oak Grove was jammed with people, and even though a train arrived momentarily, it was already packed beyond capacity. Rather than wait for the next train, I went out the Franklin Street exit and just walked up to State State Street Station.

I've never seen the Blue Line platform at State that crowded, but I managed to squeeze into the lead car at the far end of the platform. All of the passengers seemed very calm and patient. I think it's a combination of holding your breath that nothing else goes wrong with the , and also being glad you're not stuck driving in terrible traffic!

My Blue Line train did stop for an extra minute or two at some of the stations. At Suffolk Downs, the driver announced that we'd be waiting for two minutes, and that he's closing the doors to keep the heat in. He also said that if anyone wanted to open the doors, they should press one of the green "Door Open" buttons. I've never seen that feature used other than at Bowdoin Station. It was very thoughtful of the driver to do a little something extra in consideration of his passengers' comfort!

( Now home, but dismayed at the news of Beverly Scott's resignation. )

Not outrageous, but pretty funny:

Today, if you recall, the T was only running one Orange Line train back-and-forth between Wellington and Oak Grove, so you had to switch trains at Wellington for continued service.

On my way back to Boston from Oak Grove (at around 4:00) our train stopped right outside of Wellington. 10 minutes of radio silence later, the operator got on the mic and said "Pardon the wait, folks, there's, uh, traffic up ahead. We'll be moving shortly."

Traffic ahead? Really? We were literally the only train on the tracks! I'm sure there was some technical legitimate reason for the delay, but maybe they should have picked a better lie.

Somehow it appears that the T succeeded at clearing the snow of the tracks inside the Back Bay Station, that's gotta count for something right?

I actually worked a few hours later today just to avoid this. Not to make extra money or meet a deadline.

in the North Station photo, you will note that only one train on the board has the notation CANCELLED.
