Parents in one city start petition drive to keep their school superintendent from heading here

Parents in Richmond, Va., are signing a petition to convince their current school superintendent, Dana Bedden from moving to Boston if he's offered the superintendent's job here.

Bedden, being interviewed in Boston today, is one of four finalists for the job left vacant when Carol Johnson left in 2013. The School Committee expects to pick one of the four on March 3 for consideration by Mayor Walsh.

Sounds like a pretty good endorsement for him then!

Couldn't this demonstration of Bedden's popularity (and, presumably, effectiveness) strengthen his candidacy, making him more likely to get the Boston job and leave Richmond?

Wonder why we keep poaching superintendents from Richmond. Nothing against Richmond, but the schools aren't anything special.

Except Open High. Boston could use something like Richmond Open High.

Dr. Bedden has only been superintendent at Richmond for thirteen months. Prior to that, he was superintendent in Irving, TX for three years. Before that, he was superintendent in Georgia for three years. Prior to THAT, he was superintendent in PA for under three years.

I don't know anything about his talents, and the parents in Richmond seem to think highly of him, but his inability to commit to a district for a sustained period of time should be a deal-breaker. BPS needs someone who can stick to the job for a significant period of time, especially considering the glacial pace of change within BPS, the time required to learn about the district's neighborhoods, student population, student assignment nonsense, er, policy, etc., and the need for someone to oversee the implementation of, and inevitable backlash to, the Common Core and PARCC. I don't think someone can make a lasting impact on the district in three years.

Memphis parents petitioned Carol Johnson not to leave for Boston as well.

dissuade ... from

I think you mean the latter.

Should you investigate the list of individuals who signed the petition, I am sure you will find the majority do not have children who attend Richmond Public Schools. You will also find that a majority who signed the petition do not live in the City of Richmond but rather in surrounding counties served by different school divisions.
