Police: Portsmouth, NH motel barricader was same guy who shot at a Cambridge cop this morning

Police in Cambridge and Portsmouth, NH say a man who barricaded himself into a motel before fatally shooting himself was the same man wanted for firing on a Cambridge police officer investigating a housebreak at Fifth and Gore streets shortly after midnight.

Cambridge Police report they tipped off their Portsmouth counterparts after learning in their investigation that Nicholas Cammarata, 30, of Saugus, had apparently headed to America's Best Inn there.

Cambridge Police add the man was already wanted locally for multiple warrants out of Middlesex Superior Court, including assault to murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and carrying a dangerous weapon.

Portsmouth Police headed to the motel shortly after 3 p.m.

Police made phone contact with the subject who quickly ended the conversation. Shortly after, the subject opened a window to his room and was immediately challenged by officers on the perimeter. The subject then retreated back into the room and a gunshot was heard coming from the room.

Police tried to re-engage the subject but got no response. The State Police used a robot to look into the room and it was soon determined that the subject was deceased by what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Glad to read that the Cambridge cop who was shot at was uninjured. In my experience, the men and women of the Cambridge PD are some of the best people around.

The Cambridge PD puts up with a lot of crap, from a vast array of self-righteous assholes.

the Route 1 bypass was signed as closed, and cops all over the place visible from the NH Turnpike. Saw this and figured it must have been that. It was.
