Unbelievable. How does a cop, of all people, think this would've worked? Something else this cop is hiding, I'll bet.

He was a part time cop.. Only 24 years old. I always thought recruits should be at least 28 years old.

Luckily he will be fired, never become a full time officer, and will HOPEFULLY face some serious chargers.

Sincerely,

A Boston Cop

I remember going to Hampton Beach the summer after graduating high school and seeing one of my classmates working as a cop. He was a damn teenager!

School was cancelled.

Everyone was looking for a man in a maroon truck.

Keystone Cops.

It would be funny if policemen weren't killing people and lying about it. A year after Michael Brown’s fatal shooting, unarmed black men are seven times more likely than whites to die by police gunfire

You should be much more scared of black men than cops, you are probably 100 times more likely to be shot by them than by cops or whites.......(If I had your logic, I could make an uneducated illogical remark about how dangerous blacks are here________)

Does the piece take into account the reactive calls police get to black crimes? That would probably be a factor in cop vs. anything. But keep your eyes closed, other people might think and act for you.

Clown.

I also love how your link starts out: "It starts with a minor incident, A traffic stop, a "burglary". Are you fcking kidding me? Is a burglary a minor incident to you EB Dubois? If you break into someones home, expect to get hurt. By the police, by the homeowner, by the alarm company, by a neighbor or citizen who sees you break in. Just amazing.

I had no idea unarmed black men are seven times more likely than whites to die by police gunfire.

Why are police shooting unarmed black men at 7x the rate of unarmed white men?

Tamir Rice was 10 years old, he had a toy gun. It took the police 2 seconds to shoot him after they rolled up. Then they didn't give him first aid. His sister watched from the back seat of the police car because they arrested her because she wanted to try to help her brother.

The cop wearing a body cam in Ohio shot that guy who didn't have a front license plate. He shot him in the face and killed him. He wasn't armed. Then the officer lied and said the guy was dragging him with his car. Two other officers at the scene corroborated his story. It was false. The video showed the truth. The (Republican) DA filed murder charges and held a press conference in which he said how egregious the killing was.

The cop from Millis used a spare gun to shoot his own cruiser and put the entire area on lockdown over a lie. At least he didn't kill anyone.

Mike Brown got stopped for jaywalking. He was unarmed. The officer dumped the entire clip, all twelve shots, most of them as Mike Brown was running away.. Running away: He wasn't a threat. Officer Darren Wilson has no regrets. Oh well, another dead black kid. Well, Mike shouldn't have this and that. HE WAS UNARMED. HE WAS RUNNING AWAY. HE WASN'T A THREAT. Darren, what would you do differently? Nothing, I have no regrets.

Kajieme Powell was gunned down in the streets of St Louis. He was armed with a steak knife and guilty of stealing about $4 worth of snacks from the convenience store. Both officers didn't stop shooting until their firearms were empty.

John Crawford was gunned down in Walmart while talking on the phone and carrying a toy gun from aisle 5. Two white guys from Ohio did exactly the same thing, were stopped by the police and left the store upright under their own power.

Unarmed Danroy Henry was 20 when he shot and killed by an officer. He was out with his buddies. They had driven to a bar. He was in his car, unarmed.

Police officers aren't supposed to shot and kill unarmed people. They shot and kill black unarmed people a lot more than unarmed white people. That's a problem.

Danroy Henry was out with his friends, in public, in a parking lot. John Crawford was in Walmart. Kajieme Powell was on the sidewalk during the day. Mike Brown was walking down the street in an apartment complex on a Saturday morning in August. The guy from Ohio who was shot in the face was also in the middle of the day, in public, didn't have a front plate. Tamir Rice was in a public park. He didn't have a chance.

The only way we'll know the truth (because cops lie when they kill someone unjustifiably) is for the police to wear police body cams. We can't trust them to tell the truth. We can't trust their brothers in arms to tell the truth. It's time the cops, who get qualified immunity for using lethal force, to wear a body cam. Now.

Pete, I'm not scared of black people. If you are, you should work on that.

I could write once 1000x longer with examples of black people killing other black people. (With probably 95% of them lying about why they killed someone) But that would be as illogical as your list, except I would at least know it would be illogical.

I'm not scared of cops or black people, but I at least know which group will be more likely to kill me. That's risk assessment 101.

When a police officer kills an unarmed citizen they rarely go to trial and when they do, they are rarely convicted. Black kids go to prison for breaking rules in school.

Black Lives Matter is not about hating cops! They protest police brutality & lack of accountability.

More than 100 unarmed black people were killed by police in 2014. Here are their names and stories.

Was being chased for a robbery and fell into a pole and died from those injuries. And you want to include him in some sort of police brutality issue? No need to read further after reading that one. What a waste of time.

That is more the norm than the exception. All the C- students who were angry meatheads go on to become cops.

..and to think, these people carry a lethal weapon that they can "legally" use. God help us.

Yuppies love the police. You have exposed yourself as a troll wannabe, probably a D- student who couldn't become a cop or anything else.

Where the cops pull over a woman doing forty over the limit in the wee hours, in a car that isn't hers, while driving without a license, and call her drug dealer to come pick her up.

So she can jump behind the wheel, drive 2x the speed limit, and kill several people the next morning.

Oh, but it was "just an accident". Yeah.

...I want to say Warren, MA, a guy convinced a cop that he 'could make it home'. Cop was being a nice guy.
You know the rest. He got into an accident, the municipality was on the hook for a huge settlement.

I remember that incident, couple of folks on bikes got killed. If what you say is true (and I'm not doubting you for a sec) then the phrase 'settled out of court for an undisclosed sum' is written somewhere.

It's the only way to get the message across. The municipality must either screen better or pay the penalty.

Was he a temporary summer cop? Generally, they don't even have guns and have limited powers. They hang out in the busy areas directing traffic, etc.

What a chooch!!
Only in the suburbs ...it must be the water their drinking...that's making people in the suburbs think this way..

They're.

Only in the suburbs...

Good point, I don't think we've ever seen city cops do dumb stuff. Never.
Uh, sure.

Man, what a chooch.

Something about the cruiser crashing and bursting into flames....
Sounded fishy when I first heard it on the radio. And immediately wondered if the officer was making up the shooting to cover up his own fault in a dumb single-car accident.

They had a 'neighbor' that saw the whole thing. Pickup truck and cop car. Through a major intersection. Busy. People could have been killed.

"Dwyer said the officer is new to the force and has not yet attended the police academy".

Wait, what?

With 14 full-time cops, not a major city.

Not unusual for suburban communities to put new cops on the streets before they get training at the academy, from what I've seen. Including a couple visits to observe training at one of the suburban police academies. Admittedly, my knowledge of this is more than a decade old and limited then. My somewhat foggy recollection was that it had something to do with when the regional police academies ran--versus when communities got new budgets for police (often start of July), etc. Or something like that.

So, he hadn't been to the academy yet, but they gave him a gun, a badge, and a car and sent him out onto the streets ALONE!?!

WHATCHU TALKIN' 'BOUT, MILLIS!?

And what was going through this guy's mind!? Did he think he was going to stroll back into headquarters and just be like "hey, where do you guys keep the spare bullets for no reason whatsoever I'd like to know thanks?".

when I read this story:

Barney Fife

Barney was only permitted to carry one round in his shirt pocket, so he wouldn't have been able to pull this off.

I stand corrected. Perhaps Goober was on duty as a temporary deputy then.

He crashed a patrol car messing around and was looking for an excuse for wrecking the car.

So nice that he gets to take assault weapons home from work too and is exempt for a bunch of MA gun laws. Majesty of the law and all.

Fell asleep
Was dicking around with his phone

Eyewitnesses say he was speeding. Did he have a crash before he shot his car? Are officers allowed to carry two weapons on duty?

His drivers license is the issue!

These "Permanent Intermittent" officers aren't untrained, they do attend a reserve officer academy, and have to have further training if they are going to be armed, but its nowhere near as lengthy or extensive as a full time police academy (you know, like the movie, without the shenanigans).

A lot of places use these officers, especially touristy places in southeast MA during the summer, and don't seem to have had any similar incidents.

Maybe he saw the movie?

Very few cops believed this from the outset. It's one thing to get shot at, another thing for a modern cruiser to be totally destroyed by fire. For both to happen at the same time is absurd. There have been a few officers over the years that fabricate attacks on themselves. The job is 99% boredom, 1% sheer terror. Some can't handle the boredom. Good job by Millis and State Police to catch this within 24 hours.

What an idiot.

All he had to do was say a red pickup truck went over the lines and caused him to crash, that would have been enough. (Although if he is on probation and non-civil service, the Town could probably fire him for a crash like this either way)

I still have to think that town has enough details to keep a good salary in order to get some good cops. I guess not.

They rolled out every piece of military gear they had. I think I saw that the state police joined, and the news reported they were running an airborne search.

Every cop in Millis had a hard on to catch this guy in the red or maroon truck.

They called for shelter in place, the whole town, and they cancelled school the next day... so they didn't exactly catch this right away. They bought the guys story.

On Friday news one of the officers in the department was saying what a great guy he is. Wow. He broke the public trust. It's pretty amazing that the officer wasn't talking about that.

to start on the force with before going to academy. If he crashes it while texting, no great loss to the taxpayers.

Adam: selectively branching out on news coverage outside Boston now?

Blue Lives Matter, okay??

This was a cop that was shot at by an initially unknown assailant! If we can't be sure every cop whose car is shot at gets as much attention as some thug or gangbanger who didn't have a gun THIS time, then we have failed as a society!

up

A whole hell of a lot of cops who die in the line of duty are killed in motor vehicle mishaps! Time for a seatbelt wearing crusade to raise cop awareness of how not to kill yourself when you do fall asleep while driving after 10 hours on detail and 8 on duty!

You should know I routinely, if not exhaustively, cover or link to non-Boston stuff in eastern Mass., especially if it's weird enough - like the Wachusett Mountain water buffalo.

Millis isn't that far away from Boston (I can be there quicker than I can be in Arlington; people used to take street cars out to the kosher hotels there back in the day). And while this isn't a quirky story like the water buffalo, it was going to turn into a national story (if I have to explain why, you need to read more), at least until its rather dramatic, if incredibly stupid, denouement today.

up
Voting closed 0

So that being the case why didn't you cover the original story of the cop bring shot at and not just the one where he lied?

And simply ran out of time.

up

I don't how you do it.

Putting up with all these conceited dingbats on the right and left who show up for the glory of cutting someone else down in the comment section of a news blog is a worthy feat.

It was a national story before he recanted.

up

He recanted and he had a spare gun. Is that procedure in Millis or just NYPD during the days of Serpico?

up

How come this guy is fired right away but the Medford Officer who assaulted a citizen on video over a month ago is still on paid administrative leave?

up
Voting closed 0

He was a non union, non civil service, reserve officer on probation.

So they can pretty much fire him for any reason.
