Police: Teen in stolen SUV drives into pedestrian in Somerville

State Police report arresting two teens after one of them allegedly drove a stolen Jeep into a man walking under I-93 around 3:30 p.m.

The man remains in serious condition at Mass. General, State Police say.

State Police say Arthur L. Woods IV, 18, of Arlington, was tooling around in the stolen vehicle with Elvira C. Sanchez, 19, of Malden, when a trooper called in the Jeep's license plate, discovered it was stolen from Melrose and called in other troopers and Somerville officers to help stop the vehicle:

As other state and local cruisers began responding to the area, the occupants of the Jeep noticed one of them and sped off.

The trooper who initially spotted the stolen vehicle began following in the direction in which it fled.

While fleeing after spotting the cruisers, the stolen Jeep turned into Lombardi Way, part of the ramp complex between Route 38 and Mystic Avenue, under a Route 93. Preliminary investigation indicates the Jeep went off the road, into the median between the opposite lanes, and struck a male pedestrian who was walking in the median.

The occupants of the Jeep abandoned the vehicle and ran off. Both were apprehended quickly.

Woods faces a variety of motor-vehicle charges, including leaving the scene of a crash causing personal injury, receiving stolen property and possession of a Class A drug with intent to distribute. Sanchez was charged with receiving stolen property and disorderly conduc.

Possession of heroin, in addition to stealing a jeep and crashing into a man, leaving him in serious condition? This POS should be charged with attempted homicide. Sanchez is also a piece of work.

Its called opiate addiction, not heroine, haven't you listened to conservatives like Baker's rebranding? Its a white working/middle class problem so its also a crisis that requires treatment and understanding.

There are PLENTY of non-white heroin and other opiate addicts.

Opiates can of course alsoo refer to substances/pills other than heroin.

Just to show how biased our laws are against pedestrians and cyclists, out of all the charges filed he is not being prosecuted for running someone over. That part was just an "accident".

The part about the pedestrian being on the median makes that kind of a gray area- there are some states where it's not considered a legal walkway/ right of way for a pedestrian

"Being on the median" is generally what is known as "how you cross the street".

Not sure where you live, Anon, but people actually walk in this area and the crossing arrangements and crosswalks and lights actually involve use of the medians!

In areas such as this, the routings for pedestrians frequently involve use of the medians, too.

Not sure where the actual accident was, but do check out this streetview and this streetview of crosswalks in the area.

Since my first reply didn't make the cut Saturday- Was out Sunday on McGrath Highway around Broadway and saw a guy riding his bike on the median

Is that really true? How is this possible?

There is clearly a social problem in this community, and the law-abiding drivers of Arlington must speak up clearly against this behavior just as cyclists have been encouraged to do so with their peers.

Low income, group, and half-way housing brings more of them. Mr. Woods and Ms. Sanchez could be the next parents of a baby Doe.

There was a funny one this summer where a couple was passed out naked on a couch behind the Regent theater though: http://patch.com/massachusetts/arlington/police-charge-naked-pair-indece...

Arthur Woods IV certainly sounds more like oils money than public housing to me. Affluenza anyone?
