Notes of remembrance left on Irving's store in Brookline

Tracey Staedter was heartened today to see all the sticky notes left on Irving's on Harvard Street by fans of longtime owner Ethel Weiss, who died last week at 101:

Ever since my daughter was born in February, I had intended to visit Irving's to buy her a toy and hopefully get picture of her with Ms. Weiss. So sad I won't get that chance now.

The business is still in business without her.

Her kids? Grandkids? Will it go on without her?

An earlier news story mentioned one of her daughters had been helping her with the books recently.

It was a cute, cool little place, with neat stuff. Ethel Weiss was a nice woman, too.

I took my one-year-old son to her shop in 2012, and she didn't have a care if we were interested in buying a single thing. She wanted to meet my son, a complete stranger who couldn't even talk. She asked me about him, about me, about my wife, and anyone else I wanted to talk about. And her sincerity was remarkable. I was incredibly touched by that interaction.

I'm happy for the legacy this wonderful person has bestowed upon her family. 101 years of love an respect for others. That's a good way to go.
