Roslindale bucks up

Major deer spotted at the Roslindale Wetlands off Weld and Walter streets, near the Arboretum. He's also been spotted at Stony Brook (at the intersection of Washington and the parkway, no less), so don't be too startled if you see this huge woodland creature bounding through your backyard some evening.

it's mind boggling how some people see such a beautiful animal and think, "yeah... i want to kill that" and that's considered normal.

Not a hunter myself, but we do have a pretty long track record of hunting over the past few millenia so yeah, that's not a sign of some psychological problem. Unless you're a vegetarian, hunting is the most ethical way to get animal protein into your diet, right?

If you are hungry enough it is quite normal for anything to become, "damn that looks mighty tasty as part of survival instincts.

like other wild animals, would hurt or kill you in a heartbeat, given the correct circumstances; even if you were totally innocent and did nothing to it. Many people need to get in greater touch with real nature, not a cartoon or pop culture version. Our world is a beautiful place, with beautiful creatures big and small. It's also, for all it's stunning beauty, very dangerous, especially for the naive.

They're also extremely overpopulated in some areas.

Now I'm hungry for venison, and the season is months away.

No need to wait until the season. Lots of on-line options, including here.

That's not fresh venison. I'm looking for all-natural, free range, and locally sourced venison.

Thanks for the tip, though.

When I was younger, my family supplemented the food budget with game. That's how my parents grew up, too. I never felt good about the killing part, but that's a lot of food for a family on a marginal income.

I have family and friends who still hunt each fall - and use nearly every bit of the animals they take down. Me? Like my Dad did in his later years, I'm happy just to "hunt" the animal and take pictures of something I know damn well I could have shot.

Hunting is illegal in the city. They even have a "No Hunting" sign in Readville.

In most of the city, you're too close to housing anyways, right? Which raises the question where is the remotest part of Boston, meaning farthest from an active commercial or residential building?

I.e., in one of the cemeteries of West Roxbury.

No matter, still cool they're joining turkey as some wildlife moves into the city.

John Deer?

Give this guy a couple of years and he'll look like Hartford, our neighborhood buck.
