Second arrest could mean end of Jamaica Plain armed-robbery spree

Heath Carson

A Quincy man faces charges he participated in two of the five gunpoint robberies that had left Jamaica Plain shop owners on edge.

Heath Carson, 35, was arraigned last week on charges he was one of two guys who helped hold up Tostado, 300 Centre St. on Jan. 22 and is expected to be arraigned on charges he held up the JP Variety Store on South Street on Jan. 6, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports, adding he gave himself up to police on Feb. 11.

Although Richard Perry is charged with actually pointing the gun at a Tostado clerk, Carson "drove Perry to and from Tostado Sandwich Bar and provided him with the weapon used in the robbery," the DA's office says. Perry, 41, was already wanted for a pair of armed holdups in Cambridge when he was arrested at a Minden Street residence the next day.

West Roxbury District Court Judge Paul McManus set Carson's bail at $10,000 - prosecutors had asked for $75,000 - but then ordered him shipped to Cambridge, where he was facing other charges.

Carson is also expected to be arraigned for the JP Variety Store hold up, the DA's office reports. In that robbery, the DA's office says:

Carson is accused of holding what appeared to be a firearm to a store clerk's back and demanding money and cigarettes. He fled with an estimated $400 from the register, $15 belonging to the clerk, and approximately 36 packs of Marlboro cigarettes. Carson was identified through surveillance images depicting the robbery, and a search of his vehicle uncovered clothing matching that worn during the armed robbery.

Police are now investigating Carson's and Perry's possible links to three other robberies in JP in December and January, at JP Auto Services, City Feed and Supply and Metro PCS.

Innocent, etc.
