Shocking: Men charged with stealing batteries from the side of the road

State Police report short circuiting a Melrose duo's battery-theft spree along area highways yesterday.

William Copson, 54, and Sean Brogna, 46, face charges of larceny over $250, malicious destruction of property over $250, conspiracy and, of course, possession of burglarious tools, following their arrest on Rte. 128 - in a pickup truck loaded with batteries from MassDOT electronic message boards.

State Police say somebody called from 128 in Wakefield around 2 p.m. yesterday to report he was positive he saw two guys lifting the battery out of a signboard installation there.

As the trooper responded to the area, the caller kept State Police Communications updated with the location of the suspicious males and the criminal conduct he was observing. Through maintaining this connection, Trooper [Robert] Duprey was able to locate the truck involved, a 2002 Ford F150, and conduct a motor vehicle stop with the assistance of Trooper Richard Barnard. The troopers observed sixteen batteries (specific value yet to be determined) in the bed of the pickup truck with various cut cables still attached.

Speaking of weird thefts, Clifford Beckford, the guy charged with stealing airplane beacon lights out of the Zakim is due back in court today after a mental-health evaluation.

You missed the bottom of the copy.. its cut off.

On a different note, would love to know what these guys are doing with these. Batteries are something that are a pain to get rid of, sooo.. anyone know what the use would be for?

Fixed. What happened is that I still believe in only the finest hand-crafted (artisanal, if you will) hyperlinks, but getting them to work requires I embed the URLs in either double-quotation marks or single ones, I prefer double quotes, but it seems like I keep forgetting the shift key when doing the first of them (yes, it's always the first one I screw up for some reason).

18 cents/lb for whole batteries, 45 cents/lb for lead (Second St. Metals in Everett, for example) is my guess. Hopefully this sparks an investigation! (and they're off!)

Since they are so practical for cargo transport? Oh, they would need a motor to be allowed on the highway.
