Somerville man charged with stabbing outside Haymarket bar

A Somerville man losing a fight outside the Point bar on Hanover Street early this morning regained the advantage by pulling out a knife and stabbing his opponent in the neck, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

Evan Cobb, 22, was arraigned on charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and carrying a dangerous weapon - a folding knife. Prosecutors asked for bail of $10,000, but Boston Municipal Court Judge Catherine Coyne released him on his own recognizance.

Prosecutors say Cobb and another man got into an argument that turned into a fight - and that Cobb told police after he'd been read his rights "he pulled out a knife when the victim overpowered him in the fight."

Police who arrived on a report of a stabbing found Cobb with a laceration over his eye, then noticed a blood trail that led into the Point - where they found a 32-year-old man "lying on the floor with a stab wound to his neck," the DA's office reports.

Witnesses identified Cobb as the assailant, indicating that he and the victim had been involved in a verbal argument outside that led to a physical altercation. One witness observed Cobb holding a knife behind his back during the fight.

Officers found a folding knife clipped to Cobb's back pocket, the DA's office says.

The victim was taken to Mass. General for treatment and has since been released, the DA's office says, adding Cobb was treated at Tufts Medical Centerl for a swollen lip and various cuts and scratches.

Innocent, etc.
