South End pizza maker expands to Uphams Corner

The Boston Licensing Board last week gave the owner of a South End pizzeria permission to open a new place on Columbia Road, next to the Strand Theatre.

Aycan Gencoglu, owner of South End Pizza and Grill, plans a 40-seat outdoor patio for his Boston Pizza Grill, 533-541 Columbia Rd. The board approved hours of 10 a.m. to 2 a.m.

At a hearing last week, Gencoglu told the board his eatery will also serve frozen yogurt.

The mayor's office and City Councilors Frank Baker, Michelle Wu and Ayanna Pressley all supported the proposal. Nobody spoke against it the hearing.

Anyone know if this place got any better?

Man when I lived in the SE a few years ago we used to get their fliers by the bundle. Ordered twice from them, the order was wrong once, and the second one.. food was inedible.

I hope they've changed some before they expanded.

We have enough decent pizza to go around - you're clearly missing the important part of this story :)

I lived around the corner from them when I was in college and the food was always awful. We'd always get NY pizza instead, it was an order of magnitude better. The only thing this place had going for it was heavy duty advertising and a willingness to deliver all the way to Roxbury. I still get fliers from them.

Anyone know of anyplace decent in the South End? Little Steves is the best I've found relatively close but is a pain to get to from the SE. The Regina's at the Pru was good (I know, not as good as the original location) but that will no longer be an option.

I used to order from Nicole's.. It's been a few years so I don't know if it's changed or not.

Picco! My favorite pizza in the city.

Nicole's and Emilio's are pretty good. Not spectacular.

I liked Upper Crust before. New management, though maybe of better virtue, does not make the pizza as well.

PICCO and Anchovie's are decent.

When NY Pizza makes a good pie, I really like it. (Mass Ave or Theater district). But sometimes (especially late night) I think they get lazy and don't use any sauce.

SE Pizza is nothing special.

Bottom Line: none of them is going to win any major culinary awards.

I hope they stop digging up Columbia Road or this new place is going to suffer like the rest of us who try to travel through Uphams Corner every day. They have been digging up the street and blocking traffic for almost 2 years. An article in boston.com from way back in August, 2013 promised it would be finished "at the latest" by September 2014. It looks like they have a long, long way to go before it looks as pretty as the picture in that story.

No more pizza please.

Pizza across the street at Uphams Pizza.
Pizza to the left at Parasio (on Dudley St, 1 block)
Pizza to the right at Hancock Pizza (Hancock St)
Pizza to the east at Venice Pizza ( Dot Ave)

Bad Pizza in all directions.

South End/Boston Pizza = same bad pizza.
