South Station safe cracker sought

Wanted man

Transit Police report they are looking for this yegg for a safe-cracking job in the basement of South Station on March 16.

After breaking into an office in the station basement and opening the safe - police did not say how - he took money and fled in a cab, which dropped him off on Decatur Street in Charlestown.

If he looks familiar, contact detectives at 617-222-1050 or send an anonymous tip to 873873.

Finally, a good old-fashioned crime that takes some skill!

You get the Crossword Crown for knowing what a "yegg" is.

I can almost picture Gaffin writing that line in his well worn fedora with an El Producto in his mouth.

South station has a lot of shady characters, an Amtrak cop warned me to stay out food court and the rest room never mind the basement.

Locals know South Station is to be avoided but Back Bay is just fine and serves the same stations. The restrooms there are fantastic and well worth the trip even if you aren't taking a train.

Sure there may be a few unsavory characters around but it is unlikely any of them will bother you, beyond asking for change, at least inside the station. Certainly no reason to avoid South Station if you need to catch a train.

My first time in South Station recently, I go to use the bathroom and there are several staff members (not T cops) trying to rouse some guy who passed out in the handicap stall. Someone else was getting sick in another stall.

A month ago two guys were running some sort of scam where they tell people coming out of stalls, "Yo man, you forgot your wallet in here." Probably trying to get people to come back in so they could further scam/intimidate money out of them or mug them.

Last night it was someone trying to start a fight with someone who opened a toilet stall door while he was in there. The lock was broken/missing, of course. A cleaning staff person was trying to calm him down.

As I walk out of South Station, I see what the "Transit" Cops are busy with: Driving around the surface roads and enforcing Boston traffic laws. One was in the midst of pulling someone over for going the wrong way down a one-way near 1 Financial Center. Nice police work, guys.

I've seen up to three T cops in the station--all sitting, standing, or lounging around the Transit Police kiosk. I bet if even one of them chose to not-do-anything but did so standing in the alcove to the restrooms rather than their little booth, it would clean up the shadiness in the bathrooms overnight.

Now that is a jog down memory lane, a true son of Charlestown, back in the day, the BPD would automatically dispatch two detectives over the bridge into Charlestown's City Square whenever a Bank Hit / Armour Car heist / Safecracking Job occurred.

The only criminals in Charlestown these days wear suits and work in hedge funds.

Mug people in the projects, or sling drugs at the Dunkin, or shoot innocents on Main St.

Jackass.

And they're everywhere! You don't have to use a derogatory term like that. Geez!
