The Herald reports on yesterday's arraignment of Wayne Barber, charged with slashing a woman's throat in a mugging in a Fenway alley early Sunday. He has a lengthy criminal record.

Innocent, etc.

16-page board of probation record, which dates to the 1980s. According to Suffolk District Attorney spokesman Jake Wark, Barber has 10 known aliases and prior convictions for armed robbery, assault with a dangerous weapon, larceny, assault and battery on a police officer, negligent operation, and possession of a class B substance

And this guy is out and about?

Mark
He ain't trying to turn nothing around. He is a career criminal. Every time he gets out he does something to go back in. This man has been institutionalized all his life he knows no other way.

Pills are sold openly on the street around where this attack happened. Most of the addicts and dealers gather in and around the Fenway Victory Gardens where there is a scarcity of BPD patrols, surveillance and arrests. There is no scarcity of discarded needles.

The Herald piece didn't mention any evidence other than possession of the iPhone and some purse contents.

Now, privately, we might each strongly suspect that he's guilty, but assuming guilt and then carrying on in a public forum with condemnation of the accused is not how we're supposed to do things in America.

There's plenty of other fodder for the forum: sympathy for the victim, anger that someone would do this, inspiration to try to prevent this happening to someone else. None of that involves throwing away our principles of justice.

Um, the police caught the perp running away from the scene with the stolen goods, the knife, blood of the victim on them, and the victim gave the exact description. There is likely video of the attack from the alley having security cameras.

How much more do you want?

If you read the other thread, there was the whole victim description of clothing and age and such, and catching him running in a nearby location.

Guilty or not, we can still ask why he was even out on the street with the rap sheet he's cultivated during a long and violent career.

In our system, each conviction carries a particular sentence. When you serve that sentence, we release you, because we prefer not to create gulags. That's why he's walking the streets. You don't want to live in one of the country's where the government "disappears" people.

to folks pushing for "criminal justice reform." Yeah I get that you don't want to make more problems than you solve by locking people up for the minor stuff, but remember that the world isn't all smiles and sunshine, and some people do need to be locked up for good.

First of all, could you be any more patronizing?

Secondly, that movement is aimed at NON VIOLENT offenders, not at career criminals like this one. These are the people who should be in jail.

Also, the movement is aimed at humanizing prisons such that first time non-violent offenders don't get turned into complete animals, and that people receive the treatment and education and life skills training necessary to leave and never go back.

Well we certainly can't blame Dukakis for this one.

May the victim heal quickly and completely.

Yeah, it could be a setup by the Bilderberg group! The iPhone was planted in his pocket by reptilians.

Not sure why my comment never made it in last time, but this sounds like Daniel Rogers - wrap sheet for miles, slashed a neck of someone in the Fens over an attempted robery. Hopefully Wayne Barber gets locked away for life like Daniel Rogers was/is.
