For those of you with a jet pack, be careful in Chinatown

Look up at the corner of Knapp and Beach streets in Chinatown and you'll see this sign on an old building on Knapp Street.
Presumably, at one time, there were stairs or a fire escape on the outside of the building, because otherwise it makes no sense except for people who have won the battle with gravity:

Could it be intended to warn
Could it be intended to warn firefighters entering via a ladder truck that there's a drop because there's no floor inside those windows? A lot of old buildings have signs warning about shaftways.
