Three-alarm fire in Jamaica Plain displaces one resident, one cat

The Boston Fire Department reports a fire at 9 Porter St. did an estimated $700,000 in damage.

The fire, called in around 5:10 a.m., went to three alarms.

The department reports no injuries and that Lt. Bill Miller rescued a "scared, cold cat" and reunited it with its owner.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

I don't know if the elder Mr. Willie is still alive, but he was a great neighbor who gave me his homegrown tomatoes each summer I lived nearby. I always liked to chat with him as he worked in his yard or sat on his steps with his cat. Sad to see the homestead burn but I'm glad it seems no one was hurt.

Yes I knew him, too. Great neighbor. Great gardener, too. The old man passed away in 2012 but his son lived in the house thereafter. So sad. That house was in the family since 1978. I used to sit on the front porch and visit often.
