Time to be stocking up on milk, eggs and bread, folks

Potentially historic blizzard coming to Boston

We'll be sounding the battle-stations klaxon at the French Toast Alert bunker later today - just as soon as we get back from the sort of breakfast we'll need to be fully girded for panic forecasting.

Meanwhile, we're already wondering what Charlie Baker will wear in his first appearance in the Bunka.

This ain't no foolin' around.

When the weather people at the TV stations start going into "potentially historic", I think "okay - big storm, we'll see".

When the NWS starts talking like that I start asking around the neighborhood to figure out who has the community roof rake and make sure it is at the ready, and battening down the hatches.

In East Boston most people are stocking up on Lottery scratch tickets instead, after a $10M winner last week.

heh it would be pretty cool if your path to Agora went through my exit node.

{ edit }

Ok that was a stupid comment for me to make. There is no exit when you hit up the .onion

Yeah the way the weather folks are talking.. this may be a big one. Regardless of which model you look at, we're going to get 12" at a minimum. (sounds like a hot date)

I'm kind of looking forward too it, it's been a while since we've had a burying snowstorm. I'm looking forward to strapping on my boots and getting all bundled up and taking a walk in the height of the storm to take pictures!

I went to the Chelsea Market Basket yesterday right as that storm was starting (in the very early in the am), so I'm well stocked. Although I need Milk, which I will get later today at CVS for free (thank you extra care bucks!)

I just hope work closes. Luckily this week at work, many people (including all the execs) are out of state this week at conference, so they may just close the office and/or tell people to work from home.

Got back from CVS a while ago... there was a hefty LINE there. Lots of people with bread and milk. And the bread and milk themselves was dwindling, they also had no flashlights and batteries were meh.

I also just dug up all the hardened ice on the walk out front. Saving myself alot of work later... not saying removing the ice today was a cake walk, but will be far easier now when there's two feet of snow on top!

Sure, the blizzard of '78 was fun -- no school for a couple of weeks, adventures in the snow, pioneer living, etc. But when you only get paid when you DO work, the prospect of office closings and/or commutes-from-hell is a lot less appealing. Ugh.

Good luck to everyone!

my favorite part of storms like these is telling that hedge fund guy's admin that I don't care if he needs to get back to Greenwich for double the rate, getting back to his larvae does not over ride my survival instinct and a good day to you, ma'am.

In '78 weather forecasting was nowhere near as good as it is today and a pretty good percentage of the workforce is able to plan on working from home when they know a storm is coming.

I'm very lucky because my company works from home half the time as a normal practice. Bad weather = no big deal for us.

...your company is very smart!

Here's what my go-to forecaster has to say on it. He's usually very measured in his approach:

He also looked at the composite model to predict the region of likelihood for receiving a minimum of 12 inches and Boston was in the 50-70% predictive range. So, it's more likely than not that we'll see at least a foot and some of the models have us in that 20"-48" bullseye too.

Are the Patriots leaving for Phoenix today? We cannot have them stuck in Boston for half of this week.

Leaving tomorrow after the rally, I believe.

the storm deflates in time.

Eff the rally. Just get on the plane and get outta town. Don't take chances.

If their charter buses lose traction and get stuck in the snow, all they have to do is deflate the tires...

will wear a J Crew flannel shirt and a Ralph Lauren down vest. No LL Bean's fashions for him. Well, maybe boots.

Hopefully it doesn't last until Wednesday. Two days of this is all I can take before cabin fever kicks in.

For me. I'm placing a HUGE order for takeout Chinese food and will have it for the next several days.

At Star Market on Morrissey Blvd, the most popular item (at least in my checkout line) was English muffins. Easier than making French toast.

Were they out of bread? Years ago, (was it the Summer of '91?) I lived on Mission Hill. I remember there being a hurricane watch / warning. Got let out of work early. Instead of taking the T home, which was mobbed, took the walk down Huntington. Stopped into the Calumet Market for a treat, and found the place absolutely *mobbed.* They were long out of any packaged bread stuff / milk / eggs, so people were going for things like cookies and packages of candy bars.

I'll never forget all the drawn faces of the people standing in line, clutching their packages of Grandma's cookies and brownies. Really made an impression.

I was just back from Away, and had just gotten my job back at the music store. Friends insisted that we tape our windows. I remember the hell it was scraping that stuff off afterwards.

English Muffins were 3 for 1 at that Star Market today, so that may have had something to do with it

What you really need is a good source of heat. Blizzards bring very strong winds, which blow down trees, taking power lines. Drifting snow slows the repair response. Blizzard does not mean "noreaster" or "storm". Get some firewood guys.!

We don't, so have to rely on our woolens and the three 20 lb heater cats (one for each bed).

Aziza (my pet Congo African Grey Parrot) has a warm quilted cover that I put over her cage at night, so that keeps her warm and comfortable while she's at rest, and therefore not active.

We put out extra suet cakes for the backyard birds.

My next door neighbor has a cockatoo named Baby Girl. As they were on sale, I bought her a box of blueberries. She loves them. She can be a handful for the neighbors, so I like to come visit, let her grimp all over me, while maybe taking a poop or two, then feed her treats.

I don't know much about parrots (only that I don't think I'd be a good parent for one); do they go dormant like mammals? Wouldn't she be an extra PITA when you do lift the cover off her cage?

African greys being different than cockatoos; much smarter.

not everybody has a wood stove. Also, since I have an exotic pet bird, which also makes me more than glad that I don't have one, and space heaters aren't so great, either.
