Red Line shut by tunnel trash fire between South Station and Downtown Crossing

Firefighters shut South Station on the Red Line and ordered the power off in both directions on the line until they could find and then extinguish what turned out to be a small trash fire on the tracks about halfway between South Station and Downtown Crossing.

BFD gave the T permission to restore power around 4:15 p.m.

The fire sent smoke into both stations.

Boston is such a dump. Trash fires are a regular occurrence. The city is so dirty it's embarrassing.

1 - 2 times per month (I take the bus every day), but it seems every time I do there is an issue.

Used it to go to a conference today - there was a bomb threat on the way in (which led to busing), and this fire on the way back (which was admittedly pretty small). What a circus.

I feel reel pity for those who rely on it for every day travel.

Why doesn't each line have a vacuum attachment (like the little yellow Green Line snow plows) for a train to go slowly through the tunnels each night and suck up all the garbage? Seems like it would be a good way to get rid of all the trash, soot, metal shavings, lead paint flakes, rat droppings, and God knows what else from catching fire or fouling the air quality.

I don't remember there being trash fires at all, let alone so many of them. Between stations, too?

What the hell is going on?

I'm guessing trash from the stations ends up on the tracks and gets blown around into the tunnels. I know this was on the Red Line, but the Green Line goes slow enough that you can actually see Dunkin Donuts cups all over the place.

I haven't noticed more trash in the T than in the past.

I have heard about more trash fires. But that's only because these days there are blogs like this one reporting minor issues that wouldn't make the mainstream news.

Because we're using those non-service hours for maintenance. Just, not of the tracks. Apparently. What trash? Hum? What?

The homeless population that lived in the Commons, the Greenway, and behind the Copley Library have been forced to live in the tunnels or stay in major terminals like Harvard, Back Bay and South Station. The Globe did a story on the drug problems at South Station and because of all the trash left behind by the homeless and other issues similar to the Occupy movement the cops will be told to evict them which will lead to more problems.

What's the point of expensive security systems if anyone can get into tunnels overnight?
