The Crimson reports Yenching Restaurant on Mass. Ave. is no more, after 40 years. No word if it will be replaced by a bank or a chain burrito place.

First they came for Elsie's, and I did not speak out...

Harvard owns that building and they have been terminating leases around the square to facilitate the work they are doing. Basically they have been getting rid of commercial tenants they are willing to part with and retaining the ones who they envision keeping in the new spaces when the work is complete. I'll bet they move BGood, Al's or or another restaurant into that space for a couple of years whily they complete the Holyoke Center.

Too bad. Leaves only the Hong Kong for Chinese in the square.

While there aren't too many Chinese places right in Harvard, at least three new ones have opened between there and Central in the past year or two. It's too bad but I'm not surprised an old option got passed over in favor of the new.

(Notwithstanding students' insatiable need for Chinese food...)

Too bad. The professor who quoted that they had scrumptious kung pao was correct, it was excellent, not too much sauce, plenty of peanuts.

Until Young and Yee closed it was a race to the bottom with the Hong Kong as to who had the worse Chinese food in Harvard Square .

There's a reason the HK is known as "The Pink Death".

Formerly a Hayes-Bickford cafeteria.

Here's a photo from around 1960: http://ids.lib.harvard.edu/ids/view/6485818

If you look beyond the General Tso's section of the menu, this was a damn good place.

What a shame. I still remember and miss The Tasty. Another loss as the Square becomes more and more sterile.
