Brookline Police report a fleet-footed thief who stole packages from apartment lobbies near Coolidge Corner wound up under a Sterns Road resident's bed before fleeing into Boston, where he tried but failed to evade the long arm of the law on Mission Hill.

Brookline Police say officers were dispatched to Sewall Avenue around 3:15 p.m. on reports of a man "riding a bike slowly and looking into vestibules." Officers found the guy, but he fled on his bike - which he discarded at Stearns Road and St. Paul Street, where officers began chasing him on foot, but lost sight of him.

At approximately 4:47pm a resident of Sterns Road called and said someone was hiding under the bed in their home and had just fled the house.

Officers again ran after him, chasing him up onto Mission Hill, where Boston officers joined in a pursuit that took them along Parker Hill Avenue, Fisher Avenue, down the woods at Back of the Hill to South Huntington Avenue, back up the woods to Fisher Avenue and then back down to South Huntington, where a Boston officer finally nabbed him around 5:20 p.m. near 100 South Huntington.

Brookline Police say the East Boston man, 27, faces arraignment tomorrow on charges of breaking and entering, receiving stolen property worth more than $250, larceny over $250, resisting arrest and being disorderly.

I'm guessing he hopped on a 66 bus and that's how they "lost sight of him" between Stearns/St. Paul and Mission Hill. Otherwise, he's one wily coyote.

Yeah, I was thinking he must be in some kind of shape, otherwise. As it was, he managed to outrun Brookline cops a couple of times and had the Boston cops doing some major cardio up and down the hill. I listened to the Mission Hill pursuit on the scanner, and once they had him in the woods behind that weird apartment building, it was like listening to a baseball rundown - you know he'd get tagged out eventually, but it took awhile.

But he actually did something different.

Edit: you mention it in your piece. the guy broke into a house and hid under the bed for a while until the residents found him.

But it's long looked out of place there - a 1960s vision of the future dropped among all the pre-war buildings. Of course, with the current building boom, it's looking more and more like it fits right in.

Tell what's weird about that building: lots of young docs making good money. Who wants to have that as neighbors? They don't care about craft beer!
