Alton Brown
I was thinking Alton Brown.
word choice
"Nonplussed" is one of those hard words to use correctly. Did you really mean "surprised and confused?" That's what nonplussed actually means.
Sometimes words have more than one meaning
I was using the second definition here.
Second definition of nonplussed
I must say I have never ever before run across the "Informal North American" usage that essentially reverses the normal meaning of this word. ;-)
Interesting
That was the only definition that I was acquainted with. I didn't know that surprised and confused were even associated with this word.
Don't get me started on "decimated" and what it doesn't mean ...
Merriam-Webster's online dictionary...
... gives only the "British" definition of "nonplussed" (which goes back to at least 1582).
Isn't Helpful...
Opposite meanings ultimately render the word useless. Kinda like "nervy." A favorite of soccer announcers worldwide, it theoretically has a differently (and opposite) meaning when used by a Yank.
sure
whatever you say boss
Haymarket?
You know that Santa is getting off at Wonderland!
Doesn't everybody?
