Apartment building demands DNA tests for tenants' dogs

WCVB reports the managers of an apartment building on A Street in Fort Point require tenants to have their dogs' DNA tested - so if maintenance workers find dog shit, they can test it and, if it matches a tenant's pet, they can be billed for the cleanup.

If only the building didn't have such a frickin' pretentious name: 315 on A. Because plain old 315 A St. just wasn't la-di-da enough.

315 on A The upscale green apartment building for green earthly conscious people wants tenants to have their dogs take a Dna test because a dog walker refuse to pick up dog shit.

Towns in the UK have been doing it for a while and it's working.

Right--it's been around for a while and is used a lot by condominium communities. Ours has been using it (we were among the very first) for a while now, and it has really helped solve a persistent problem. All dogs must be tested, and the condo assumes the cost of the initial test for the database. After that, infractions are fined, plus the charge of the test. We've had almost no problems. It's a great way to allow people to have dogs but still maintain nice grounds.

Always a good story, but I feel I should point out that this has been a recurring story since at least 2011, I think even longer. Far as I can tell http://www.pooprints.com was the first company to do this and they were founded in 2008.

It's SoBo...

On 2nd thought forget about SoBo. More fictional than a Polanski movie.

That's a shitty idea!

I love dogs but hate dog owners. the dog crap all over our sidewalks is out of control and needs to be dealt with. .....and i am a dog owner.

i wish this program could be adopted by the city and enforced in all of SoBo.

Dogs are their substitute for children.

Sounds like you are a little jealous that some of us decided that for us having a dog was better than having kids. You mad?

Possibly because they cannot have children. Don't judge

So you hate all dog owners? You know that ALL dog owners don't pick up their dogs poop? I don't know where you people live but I don't have dog shit all over my streets and sidewalks and I am in a neighborhood full of dogs. Sure it happen occasionally and when I've seen it I have politely offered a bag. I have also picked up stray poops I have seen - have you?

And before you all get crazy at me - dogs owners should pick up their dog poop. But I also believe that humans should pick up their own garbage as well and there is for more shit on the street from humans than there is dog poop.

I used to hate dog owners, so it was really awkward when I had my feces analyzed and found out that some of my ancestors used to be dog owners! Turns out we're not all that different. Definitely changed my world view. I won't be surprised if some of these dogs find out they are part cat.

Assume everyone is as sociopathic as yourself, and institute further invasive police state measures to restrict their behavior.

Equity Residential is a private business. They own the property, they can manage it as they see fit. What are you, some kind of communist?

Would love to see this as MA law.

Too many scumbags walk their dogs, leashed and unleashed, and simply don't clean up after them. I liver near a popular beach and I see crap all the time. Where kids are constantly walking barefoot. I'd like to see criminal charges for letting your dog crap hear and in ballfields, if no where else.

$1000 fine to litter in places but no real penalty or enforcement on this obnoxious and health threatening douchebaggery.

Just clean up after the damn things. Good grief.

are suggesting tenants don't take the shitilizer. By shitute you lose your pooper scooper for a year.

do they make your dog shit into a specimen bag before the condo boards' eyes? picking up dog shit isn't that hard, (speaking as a dog owner) but if my condo tried doing something like this i'd give them a random street turd as a specimen just to spite them.

The DNA test is done on a cheek swab, Einstein.

chain of evidence point still stands, dingle berry. an owner could just swab their own mouth and submit it as their dog's sample.

Yeah, Mikey, that's how it works. There's a DNA test that can identify an individual dog, one that can quantify the percentages of different breeds that went into a mutt, but it still can't tell if it's a dog at all at the same time.

So you go ahead and do that, mmkay?

i am gathering that you don't know what "spite" means.

spite
spīt/Submit
noun
1.
a desire to hurt, annoy, or offend someone.
"he'd think I was saying it out of spite"
synonyms: malice, malevolence, ill will, vindictiveness, vengefulness, revenge, malignity, evil intentions, animus, enmity; More
verb
1.
deliberately hurt, annoy, or offend (someone).
"he put the house up for sale to spite his family"
synonyms: upset, hurt, make miserable, grieve, distress, wound, pain, torment, injure
"he did it to spite me"

a management company who demands DNA testing for dog shit deserves to be effed with. this is a problem that could be solved with well placed security cameras. Instead they resort to draconian foolishness.

What I don't understand is why this idea makes you so mad that you would try to figure out a way to intentionally befoul the grounds to spite it.

This solution is probably cheaper than setting up a ubiquitous surveillance network for the apartment complex, and would bother me less.

How about we agree never to be neighbors?

The fine is 110 bucks. They're not going to kill the mutt or anything.

I'd gladly move into a building with this policy whether I had a dog or not. What's the problem if you're not a douche that doesn't clean up your dog's crap?

Require DNA samples to buy cigarettes and start nailing the people who fling them randomly around their area.

Dog owners leave poop when they think no one is watching to call them out on it. Holding people accountable will take care of the problem in no time.

This goes to show the limitations of sourcing my biochemistry/DNA knowledge from the assorted Star Trek and CSI TV series as opposed to something like actual science.

It never would have occurred to me that in excrement, there would be enough cellular material to match against the source animal. I think of the bulk of excrement as left-over matter after the assorted stages of digestion - matter that started external to the source animal and wouldn't have any such DNA signature.

Can we have home tests so I can figure out who's letting their dog poop in my driveway all winter? Also the neighbor's cat who poops in my yard. Come to think of it, we could single out individual pigeons, seagulls, and sparrows as well.

It's biodegradable, where do you think all the wildlife goes to the bathroom?
Lighten up. Most responsible pet owners pick up.

I lived in the South End for 9 years and feel as though everyone there has a dog, yet encountered no dog poo on the streets until I moved to fabulous Southie.

The townies blame the yuppies and the yuppies blame the townies, but the fact is, no one here picks up their shit, so yeah, DNA test those poochies. If you all weren't so antisocial, it wouldn't be necessary.
