Back Bay paper moves to fill news hole left by demise of the Boston Courant

The new Boston Sun

The Back Bay Sun has added a reporter, changed its name to the Boston Sun and expanded into the South End and Fenway, neighborhoods, which lost a source of local news when the Boston Courant ended its press run earlier this month.

The paper is owned by the Independent Newspaper Group of Revere, which publishes weekly papers from Lynn to Jamaica Plain, including the Beacon Hill Times.

I'm familiar with a few of the Independent Newspaper Group publications. Their websites are an afterthought, at best. I followed the link to the Back Bay Sun. The most recent article is from February 4th and they're using pretty much the default settings of a popular wordpress theme. (I have customized that same theme before to look very different - it is a good choice when you play around with it).

I'm trying to figure out their business model. At least in my community, they seem to have the most youth-sport photos and do a nice "society-page" type spread. Everyone loves a photo to hang on the fridge or send to the grandparents in Florida, but what would be the Back Bay equivalent of such a thing? How would the content online be timely enough?

Boston title around the sun is awful.

Though I think it would look better if they used a classic sun with a face in it, similar to what Lowell Sun has on its masthead. I do like that the Boston Sun apparently has an active editorial page and prints letters to the editor (when they get them). The Boston Courant occasionally printed editorials and letters, but I think they did that only a few times and I can't remember them doing it in years. If only they could snag whoever wrote the police log in the Courant.

It looks like one of the Courant's laid off reporters is now writing for the Boston Sun.

Jennifer Maiola wrote the Police Blotter for the Courant, and it was always a good read.

I'm another Boston Courant reader who will miss the Police Blotter so much! Jennifer did a great job writing it, and there was always something amusing every week.
