Beware the phony HVAC man in downtown Boston and the Back Bay

Boston Police are urging businesses downtown and in the Back Bay to be wary of a guy who shows up claiming he's there to work on the heating or AC systems - he could be a thief.

Police say employees some 20 businesses in the two neighborhoods have had their personal belongings rifled through and pilfered by the guy, who uses his entree as an alleged HVAC worker to rummage through employee closets and break rooms.

He's described as white,6' and about 185 lbs.

Police urge people who find themselves with a mystery HVAC guy to ask for ID and to try to confirm that HVAC work was scheduled.

If you think you're dealing with a burglarious HVAC guy, contact detectives at 617-343-4248 or 617-343-5619.

He hit at least two businesses on the Symphony Hall block of Huntington Ave last week (Super Cuts and the tanning salon) and stole substantial cash from least one employee. Both shops have photos of the guy (obtained via surveillance camera) posted. Apparently he's been working this particular scheme for awhile, "known to police", etc.

I passed this along to our office manager. Like a lot of companies in older Boston buildings, we have fairly frequent HVAC issues, so it was good to get this warning.
