Boston finally gets its first medical-marijuana dispensary

The Globe reports Patriot Care opens today at 21 Milk St.

Originally set to open in June, the facility won zoning-board approval last August. Voters approved marijuana dispensaries in 2012.

Just in time to be driven out of business by potential legalization. Ouch.

It also took 4 years to get a medical dispensary open in the city, what makes you think a recreational one will be able to open any quicker?

Operating a medicinal facility was/is likely much easier to compete thanks to an artificially restricted market. True legalization and the rug has been pulled out from under them.

I support legalization but still feel bad for those who have been jerked around for 4 years only to get to this point.

anyone looking to open a recreational dispensary is going to get jerked around too. If the vote passes recreational dispensaries aren't just going to start opening up all over the place starting in December. The medical operations will already have a foot up on the competition having supply lines and infrastructure in place.

Recreational is going to be highly regulated, and rightfully so. Like you pointed out, they're not going to pop up like Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts. There several excellent documentaries and shows(Nat Geo, 60 Minutes) which shows the how tightly controlled/regulated Colorado's recreational pot business actually is...

There are a million of them, it's been legal for a century, and it STILL takes a full board hearing to get approval to sell nips. Every time a restaurants wants to get a full liquor license, we get half a dozen locals telling us how it will be the death of the neighborhood. I can't imagine the moral panic squad will be any less intense about recreational pot stores.

I also like the fact that we're all talking about legalization like it's an inevitability. I do have to admit that the prospect of a bunch of crusty old white guys from Beacon Hill to a board hearing, spouting lines from "Reefer Madness" and decrying the decline of the youth, is strangely appealing. We live in interesting times.

yeah, but then again, this place is owned by by a massive corporation that will have the resources to re-position themselves in the retail market. its not like this is a mom and pop store selling home grown, artisanal weed.

More like, just in time to become one of the first recreational facilities. From the ballot question:

(1) until January 1, 2018, the commission shall issue licenses first to
applicants with the most experience operating medical marijuana treatment
centers
and then by lottery among qualified applicants

The owners say they're not going to go for a recreational pot license.

Minds can be changed, including when there is money to be made.

I wonder how many ex politicians will find themselves winning the 'lottery'.

Who is financially backing this dispensary/business? I'm just curious, not opposed to it; I believe it should simply be legalized, period.

Private capital. Since it is still federal illegal, banks won't touch such a business.

the awning from the former citizen's bank ATM at this location works well with this new type of green dispensary.

Can't wait to hear his hot take, just can't figure out who he'll be pandering to.

Directly next door to the birthplace of Benjamin Franklin. Look up at the building for a great bust of him. I walked by that building for years without noticing.

a friend of mine is very curious about a few things here regarding legalization. does anyone know what the current prices and quality of strains being sold in states where it is legal? my friend says that these days an OZ of anything half decent is 300 on the street and its always a crapshoot. when I say street i'm talking about fairly established dealers not kids on the corner. he said everything seems bland, scentless and tasteless. will the prices drop and will the quality improve when legalized? will the lemon kush actually have a lemon flavor? will the girlscout cookies taste like girl scout cookies? will it be as expensive? he thinks its going to be really nice to not have to meet strangers from craigslist in home depot parking lots with unknown product and the possibility of being ripped off.
