The case against Carmen Ortiz

Daniel Marans considers prosecutorial overreach, finds Martha Coakley is not a fan of our US Attorney.

Ed. note: As you'd expect, he raises the issue of the two City Hall aides, but doesn't mention the companion case, in which five Teamsters face extortion charges for allegedly slashing tires and trying to rough up production workers for a TV reality show in Milton - after getting them booted out of Boston.

the authors seem to have a bevy of examples of prosecutorial overreach. A blind man can see the coordination of leaks with the Globe. When congressional republicans start their next round of inevitable hearings things may get interesting around here.

I can't for the life of me figure out what the Feds are doing at Boston Latin and City Hall while over at the MBTA you have a money room scandal, another face book fiasco which involved mistreatment of the homeless, runaway trains, and police beating a young girl on a bus over a bar of soap.

It would seem that there are guidelines* written in such a way that only Union labor qualifies for meeting the requirements. The city workers seemingly slipped up and said, "Just Hire Union" instead of playing the game of rejecting all non-union permits on the grounds that it failed to meet some arbitrary guideline without specifically mentioning the word Union.

If this is the case, the question is if the city approved other contracts that failed to meet these guidelines but gave this group a hard time.

People also seem to be suggesting this city employee shouldn't be prosecuted as he didn't material benefit directly from his actions. While that might be true, it's more evidence they need to go after Walsh directly. When your boss wants something done a certain way you feel obligated to oblige.

Illegal or not, it shows just how scummy local politics can be and how Marty Walsh is truly a dipshit union hack. But seeing as how he works for them, not us, good luck getting the city to ditch these bogus requirements.

*These guidelines are interesting. If they aren't published, or are extremely vague ("must pay prevailing wages") that would be another strike against the employee and city hall in general.

Coakley is not a fan of prosecutorial overreach?

SINCE WHEN?

Her, her predecessors, and her replacement are all about prosecutorial and regulatory overreach for personal or political gain.

Coakley is just trying to knock a potential rival for the corner office. I know everyone thinks it is remote that Coakley will run again, but who else do the Democrats have? It's her and Ortiz. Coakley came close to besting Baker, but I bet Ortiz could really pull it off. She's got the woman thing, the Hispanic thing, the cross-over appeal of the law & order/tough on corruption thing.

Think about it.

Do you think Boston mayor's Chief of Staff Daniel Koh still has Huff Po's Arianna Huffington on speed dial?

Martha Coakley lost a US Senate race, in Massachusetts, to Scott Brown. What more can you say?
