The Cone of Probability settles on Massachusetts

The cone of uncertainty

At 11 a.m., the National Hurricane Center extended its Matthew Cone of Probability to cover all of southern New England for Sunday. Forecasters still say it's too early to say whether we'll get walloped, so we've only raised the French Toast Alert level to Guarded, but we're going to have to spend more time considering the proposal to go to a more liquor-based alert system for this storm.

I inventoried and updated my stash of sheltering supplies last weekend, and I was surprised how many other people were doing the same when I went to get water and batteries.

If it ain't Hurricane Matthew, it will be SuperNorEaster Zeus or Extratropical Insinkorator Mayhem or some such. The batteries are good to 2028, supposedly.

I was gonna take the ferry to the cape Friday and come back Monday. Ummmmm maybe not now. Last time it was stormy, the ferry company didn't run and had buses instead. Friends of mine said it took hours to get off the cape because of traffic. Uh yeah no.

I mean a random Oct weekend probably will not have terrible traffic, the ferry does not haul that many people. But relying on the ferry sounds like a bad plan, almost as bad a plan as going on a cruise during hurricane season.

If the cone of probability is anything like the cone of silence, we won't get the hurricane. As people of a certain age will remember, the cone of silence NEVER worked correctly. Even the portable cone of silence didn't work. Sorry about that, chief.

when interpreting weather forecasts. Anything over six hours out is just an educated guess. Anything over twelve hours out is just a guess.

Try 3-4 days.

But, hey, you live in 1978, right?

As the National Hurricane Center folks will tell you, hurricanes have a one-in-three chance of winding up outside the cone of probability. There were hurricane warnings in Jamaica up through last night, for example.

Given that there are two sides to this cone, that means a 5/6 chance of getting a piece of this huge storm.

Possibly more than that, because huge.

Sox/Indians playoff game 3 scheduled for Fenway on Sunday afternoon. At least the Pats are away in Cleveland this weekend.

Boston Hatians, with family in Haiti who have been impacted by the storm must think you're hilarious. Nice way to treat our friends from the Caribbean.

WTF are you on about?

We can't talk about the storm here or prepare because of what is happening in Haiti?

Funny how you only seem to notice these things when there is a storm, not because the storm wouldn't matter if it weren't for the intractable poverty.

You are an angry and ignorant troll.
