Someone explain the appeal.

To be honest? I like my kayak just fine for this, but I can see why some people really like these things, too. I don't get those canoe things though - too easy to swamp!

It is about being on the water and enjoying oneself and sometimes about getting around, too. However you do that is a matter of personal taste.

I'm not a paddle boarder, yet, but see the appeal. In the surf you're out of the water, standing up and you can still catch waves. (More of them than other surfers, actually.) You stay drier and it's actually great exercise, esp. for the core.

I know a lot of whitewater paddlers, and quite a few of them have gotten into standup paddleboarding. Why not? It's fun, it's something different, it's a new and slightly different set of skills. For some of these folks, they want a new challenge. They can do this by seeking out more challenging and more dangerous rapids, which (depending on their proficiency level) can mean traveling a long way, or they can paddle the same river in a more challenging craft. And it's fun.

Exercise, fresh air, the feeling of freedom on the water.

on the doggie life vest. Those are a good safety measure for our four-legged friends.

Even great swimmers can get tired, cold, or injured.

...notice the important safety feature, a grab handle that's flush with the vest. There if you need it to give an assist, not hanging out able to get snagged on something if it's not needed.
