Dorchester man charged with repeatedly stabbing woman overnight

Headley Barnes, 33, was arraigned today on a variety of charges for an incident overnight that sent an 18-year-old woman to the hospital near death with multiple stab wounds and left another woman with injuries from a beating.

Barnes allegedly went amok with a knife and stabbed the 18-year-old woman five times in her stomach and once in her chest at 28 Millet St. around 3 a.m.

Barnes had bail set at $10,000 - prosecutors had asked for $50,000 - at his arraignment in Dorchester Municipal Court today on charges that included armed assault with intent to murder, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

Innocent, etc.

I understand "innocent until proven guilty" and generally understand what bail is for.

But for an accusation of such a vicious crime, I can't understand this seemingly low bail. Can anyone please explain what logic the judge might be using?

The judge must have determined that the perpetrator would not be able to post bail in that amount so there was no point in setting it higher

Only $10,000 dollar bail? Hope the other condition was that he'll have to stay with the judge's teenage daughter until the trial.
