Dorchester man gets 28 years for shooting possible federal informant in the head

A federal judge this week sentenced Jaquan Casanova to 28 years in federal prison for shooting a man on the orders of the leader of a multi-state prostitution ring convinced the man was ratting them out to the feds, the US Attorney's office in Boston reports.

Casanova, 24, was a pal of Raymond Jeffreys, also of Dorchester, who ran a ring that recruited girls and young woman on social media and at bus stops to work as prostitutes from Maine to Florida.

Earlier this year, a federal jury convicted Casanova on a witness-tampering charge for shooting Darian Thompson as Thompson sat in a car at Draper and Westville streets in Dorchester on April 30, 2013.

Jeffreys, who ordered the hit, had become convinced that Thompson - who survived the shooting - had turned rat after spending some time in federal custody in New Jersey. Jeffreys was sentenced earlier this year to 30 years in prison.

The jury also convicted Casanova of lying to federal agents investigating the ring and the shooting.
