Fight leaves Central Square Dunkin' Donuts a bloody mess

Two men got into a fight at the 616 Mass. Ave. Dunkin' Donuts yesterday afternoon that ended when one smashed the other in the face with a chair, Cambridge Police report:

A suspect and victim - both believed to be homeless - were engaged in a fight inside the coffee shop; the victim was struck by a chair and sustained a cut to his face and transported to a hospital for treatment.

There was so much blood from the gash that officers at first thought they were responding to a stabbing, police say.

Sounds like they had been overserved (too much coffee). I'm sure there'll be a hearing for that

Oh the drama! !

Central Sq. has it's issues, but it's not the South Bronx or East NY. The snowflakes I see passing through there need to get a spine and thicker skin.

Are you implying that the yuppies need to get used to daily bloodbaths at Dunkin Donuts?

The City of Cambridge and community advocates are well aware homeless congregate there, and they know why. Many homeless are, in addition to afflicted with substance use and abuse (illegal and legal, even prescribed by a 'healthcare professional') that causes dysfunctional behavior, they're also mentally ill, a substantial number have very serious mental illness like schizophrenia. Others are disproportionately afflicted with so-called personality disorders. And, not to pile it on, but many have been recently released from jails and prisons from all over eastern MA, and elsewhere, and have nowhere to go. The city chooses to do nothing to really end or even alleviate the problem.

I'll say it again: My impression of many students, undergrads and grads, among others, is they've had very limited experience outside their safe space / comfort zone. I actually find them more irritating , even rude, than most of the homeless.

Central Square is hardly chock full of yuppies! You obviously have never stepped foot in Central Sq. ...it's students, working class folks, tons of diversity, and unfortunately, a large number of drunks and drug addicts who hang around, loiter and wander in the street, which is quite sad to see. Get out more, chief.

I agree with part of your sentiment- but bloody DD bum fights aren't exactly a calling card for the neighborhood, either- I'm sure you'd be pleased to see that in your neighborhood

I've lived in Cambridge 56 years and seen a lot - doesn't mean I have to get used to this violence - being the norm doesn't make it acceptable - I don't have to get over it - I'm not a snowflake - and btw my daughter lives up in Harlem , NY and it's changed so very much and is a nice place to live - so u get over yourself - ur stuck in a time warp

Was the one right in Central Square, not the one closer to Harvard Square. I should realize there would be more than one Dunk's on such a densely packed street.

I wonder if Dunkies has a policy for the staff on how to clean up after this kind of thing. I feel bad for the employees who were possibly being exposed to someone else's blood. Can be scary!

I can't answer for any Dunkin Donuts, but I work in a retail chain (grocery store) and there is a standing policy that only a manager is allowed to clean up blood, vomit, or feces because of the risk of potentially infectious pathogens (E. Coli, HIV, Hepatitis, etc...) Our managers even go through special training on what to do and not do when cleaning up such things.

I'm afraid not every retail chain or franchise is as protective of it's workers and customers...so I share your concern for the workers who are probably stuck cleaning that up.

How could Central Square Cambridge be designed better?... for a better experience walking the sidewalks.

In many especially more corporate food service environments, the managers are required to go through training on how to clean up blood. ( kitchens and knives, after all.)
