First subway car in America

First trolley to go through the Tremont Street subway

Shortly before 6 a.m. on Sept. 1, 1897, this car moved out of a car barn and towards Park Street, where it would officially open North America's first subway service. It was not late.

Was it filled with five broken mirrors, four nightstands, three Ikea chairs, two seized dressers and a partridge in a pear tree?

We would not see so many mustaches again until the 1970s. Check out the advertisements inside the trolley!
