Hard to believe, but Boston does have other high schools

The Dig introduces us to some of the kids at Community Academy in Jamaica Plain, "an alternative BPS high school that is often a last resort for youth who are in danger of leaving or being expelled from the system."

It was a bit jarring to be reminded that a dean at English SHOT one of his former students last year and that got less coverage than racial issues at BLS, which were deemed severe enough to push out the headmaster. Who at BPS ever was penalized for the employment of that dean? Hmm....

Second, as a middle class white person in Roslindale, who doesn't have kids in upper level non-exam BPS, it's also jarring to read these kids at Community Academy talk so much about have to worry about who from which neighborhoods at various schools they might have problems with, etc.. Like as a standard, salient review point like we might consider the availability of AWC or co-curriculars. Some of these kids are at least on the fringes of gangs so that makes sense but just another stark reminder of just how different the experiences of our school ages kids are within the city vs. say Westwood.

The Globe still hasn't written about how the O'Bryant doesn't have a headmaster, either, let alone about BPS's seeming lack of haste to appoint an interim headmaster, unlike at BLS (well, OK, they mentioned her departure, but only in an article about Brookline hiring her as one of two new administrators).

And that's at another exam school.

Now throw in Shaun Harrison (who, you may recall, is charged with shooting the kid for trying to back out of Harrison's marijuana enterprise), the way Madison Park kids had no classes at the start of school in the last school year, the previous O'Bryant headmaster who beat his wife (and who then got a glowing recommendation from the school superintendent for a job in Memphis so she could quietly get him out of town) and, yeah, you begin to wonder if some of the attention focused on Boston Latin (the US Attorney and the local NAACP didn't think it was worth investigating how a pot-selling would-be murderer kept getting shifted around Boston schools?) might be better focused elsewhere.

Christ, so much more stuff I'd forgotten about. But who cares when you can take down the big game like BLS, right?
