Harvard no longer aiming to turn Allston lands into the next Harvard Square
By adamg on Tue, 07/12/2016 - 7:04am
CommonWealth Magazine reports Harvard is now thinking even bigger: It's looking to turn the wastelands into the next Kendall Square - a large "innovation zone." But:
The real question is whether Harvard, a buttoned-down institution known for trying to control everything, can stand the chaos that innovation entails. Those who have studied innovation clusters say there is no guidebook, that Harvard is setting in motion a process it cannot control.

Yawn
Why is it that every few months there's a big article about what Harvard is about to do yet... they've done almost nothing so far. They announce big ideas (remember the tram?) and then are quick to add nothing has been designed as of yet. But oh, they have great ideas.
Then silence for a while before they pop back to say they have an even better idea and the process begins anew.
Pretty soon the stock market will crash and we'll be back in a recession and once again Harvard will announce they were overly ambitious and are planning something smaller this time but like before, nothing much will come of it.
Hasn't construction started (finally) on the science center?
That's sort of the key to the whole thing.
Plus, there is that new apartment building at Barry's Corner. And, um, Swissbakers.
Hard to tell how much is
Hard to tell how much is actually happening just by cycling past.
Gotta love Continuum, 420 ft2 studios starting at $2400/mo. Do we know what happened to all the people kicked out of the apartments they tore down to not build anything on (so far)?
Barry's Corner
A lot of them went to the new "neighborhood" of housing built across Everett street by star market. It's far nicer - looks like brand new old Allston. Except it's Brighton.
Further down Western Ave
Residents were moved to another development further down Western Ave. - http://www.thecrimson.com/article/2015/3/24/allston-parking-construction...
Also, this is interesting: http://charlesviewcommunity.org/about-us/history/ (Ie. your complaining is old and tired.)
Harvard...
Considering Harvard's past treatment of the neighborhood, it is now expected to make a huge payback to Allston, do it quickly, and be open about it. For an institution as large as Harvard, with its own internal parties to listen to, this is no easy task.
I am an Allston resident and glad they're being open with their ideas - this is how they gauge reception from the community.
If you have a problem with it, get involved or be quiet. Complaining (about literally nothing) does nothing.
how will Allston be able to
how will Allston be able to handle these cRaZy iNnOvAtOrS disrupting the very fabric of urban life as we know it? e-sidewalks! wearable streetlamps! laneshares! can your puny minds even COMPREHEND this, plebs??
