Have you herd about the deer that wandered through people's yards in Roslindale today?

Deer in Roslindale yard

Mark Smith didn't have to hoof it very far to see this deer this morning: It was in his backyard on South Street along the Peters Hill side of the Arboretum.

If we allow hunting in the Allandale urban wild and the Stony Brook reservation, it might cut down on the deer population and also the outsize developments and graffiti artists.

Still, how could you shoot that adorable creature?

How? One typically uses a compound bow with deer in an urban or suburban environment. It has to be properly permitted of course given the location. Most towns won't think twice -- Mr Antlers there is prone to bouncing into traffic to say nothing of spreading ticks. I've had one in my windshield in Sharon (in town doing 30 mph) as well as had one run into my passenger door on the Pike near Framingham. Lyme's isn't a joke either...

I'm all for leaving that adorable creature alone to be sure. However, can we reintroduce Mr Antlers to his old friends Mr Mountain Lion, Mr Wolf, and Mr Bear? If not, we better take our role as the apex predator seriously. With rights come responsibilities...

Still I find it unexplainably more palatable if Misters Wolf, Bear, or Lion did the honors and not some guy with a bow and arrow.

... but just try to get a permit to keep a mountain lion in city limits. NIMBY indeed.
