Man who opened fire on a Roslindale street remains at large; his target, however, is under arrest

A man who fled a guy shooting at him on Sherwood Street Saturday was himself arrested when officers found a loaded gun in his car after he escaped getting shot, Boston Police report.

Police report that Edward McElroy, 21, of Mattapan, was outside 39 Sherwood St. around 6:35 p.m. when another man, standing in the middle of the street, shot at him.

The gunman missed McElroy, but hit his car, into which McElroy jumped and sped away, police say. The shooter then fled as well - leaving his gun behind in the middle of the street, police continue.

Police say officers found McElroy in his car on Canterbury Street at Navarre not long after - and found a loaded Glock Model 27 .40-caliber handgun from a panel in the driver's side door.

He was scheduled for arraignment today in West Roxbury Municipal Court on charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition, police say.

The hunt for the shooter continues, police say.

Innocent, etc.

You report that the shooting happened at 6:38 PM, yet you posted about it before 5, and by the time the shooting is alleged to occur, I had a offer on an anon's house based on his view that Roslindale is going to hell in a handbasket.

BPD say they responded to the shooting at that time, but that would be a mighty long lag for shots fired, no?

I'm guessing a typo on the report. I was having twitter conversations with Adam about this around 4:45pm. 16:36 hours (4:36pm) could have been misread as 6:36.

The BPD report does indeed say 6:36, but you're right - I was listening to the Canterbury traffic stop around 4:45, so it should be 4:36.

Now that's improper storage of a firearm.

Who got found by the cops with his unlicensed gun in the car with him.

Either way, two less guns out there at least.

And he had a Glock, which is only on one of the "approved" lists and therefore is so difficult to obtain. Weird how MA gun laws didn't work this time to stop a criminal.

The shots fired were more at like 4:36pm.
And though the BPD news website states that a a .22 caliber gun was found and discarded at the scene, as far as I know that information is incorrect. No gun was recovered at the scene as far as I know. One gun was indeed recovered from the victim/driver of the white vehicle who had fled.
It's unfortunate that this information got published incorrectly, perhaps to quell the fears of public. But as far as I know, only 1 gun was removed from the streets that day and it wasn't the shooters.

I understand what you're saying, Adam. Perhaps, you could try investigating with area E detectives. But If they're looking to make the public feel safer, then I guess they'll tell you the same thing.
