No tornado in the South End, but still some downed tree limbs

Downed tree in the South End

Neal Gaffey shows us the remains of a Bradford pear tree in the South End this morning, adds:

As pretty as they are in the spring, they are inappropriate as urban trees because they weaken over time and lose limbs regularly. The City is slowly replacing them with American elm, maple, pin oak, and ginkgo as they age out.

Bradford pears were also supposed to be barren at this lattitude, one of the original selling points. Instead we not only got stuck with their flowers disgusting insipid smell in the spring but also carpets of rotting worthless pest-drawing fruit covering the sidewalks in summer, and leaf cover that lasts well into winter providing the perfect roost for urban trash birds such as english sparrows and european starlings which means another sort of carpet under them all year round. Good riddance.

The fruits are no larger than a small cherry, are very hard, and don't leave much of a mess when they fall.
