O'Bryant to get interim headmaster soon as well

Although completely overshadowed by the news out of Boston Latin School, one of the city's two other exam schools, the O'Bryant, also lost its headmaster this month.

At a press conference to announce the new interim BLS headmaster today, School Superintendent Tommy Chang said he will appoint an interim O'Bryant headmaster "in coming weeks" to take over for Nicole Gittens, who announced last week she's quitting to become a deputy school superintendent in Brookline.

Chang said he will also be assembling a search committee, similar to the one being put together for Boston Latin, to find a permanent replacement for Gittens by next March.

He and Mayor Walsh said that like the BLS position, the job will be advertised nationally.

Unlike Boston Latin, the O'Bryant has gone through a number of headmasters in recent years. Gittens herself only served two years.

Having served on more than one search committee, it's important to remember that the members of the committee don't do any searching themselves. Rather, the members are presented with a list of candidates and their resumes and set about selecting candidates culled from that group. They never see applications from anyone not forwarded by the school department.

Brookline Superintendent Andrew Bott (formerly principal at Orchard Gardens) turned down for some big post at BPS, is now in Brookline and taking the best of the best from Boston, which includes the O-Bryant Headmaster
