They just get taken down, spruced up and then returned to their rightful location in Sullivan Square. Alex Carlson took a Schrafftsie today in the Schrafft Building parking lot.

I heard from WBUR this morning that the sign was not repairable and would be replaced with a new LED sign. Although this story from the Herald makes it sound as if the plan was always to replace it: http://www.bostonherald.com/news/local_coverage/2016/11/iconic_charlesto...
