Jury selection began this week for the trial of Nikolas Papadopoulos, 20, who is charged with causing a Sept. 6, 2013 crash on the Arborway by flipping his car while doing 80 m.p.h. on the way to the Jamaicaway.

Opening statements could come today, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

One of the passengers in his car, then 14, was ejected from the car and suffered brain and spine injuries; the driver of the pickup he allegedly plowed into had to be put into a coma to help him survive, authorities say.

Papadopoulos's trial is being held in Brighton Municipal Court because the Casey Overpass replacement project has eliminated parking at West Roxbury Municipal Court.

Innocent, etc.

The man he hit still can't speak/walk. He ruined the lives of many, many people and should go to jail for a very long time.

He was all set to plead guilty, but when he found out he could be sent to jail as opposed to just getting probation like he initially thought, he changed his mind and went to trial.

I don't know about you, but that speaks volume to me about his character.

I think the guy is still a giant shitbag, but you really can't fault anyone for not wanting to be in jail. Expecting people not to try to minimize their punishment is extremely unrealistic.

Indeed, this is like why we had to put up with the year-long, multimillion-dollar Marathon bomber trial. He was ready to plead guilty and get life in prison, but the feds wanted the death penalty. So he had to plead not guilty just to defend himself against the sentence.

to me about how totally fucked up our "justice" system is. Sort of like the "I won't bring this issue up before trial, because if we lose, I've got grounds for appeal" attitute of many defense lawyers these days.

And that will accomplish...?

How about 50 cents of every dollar he makes for the rest of his life goes to his victims?

After all, they will suffer from his actions for the rest of their lives; why shouldn't he?

One year of jail and then he walks away is far too lenient. They are never walking away again.

some 800-odd days, and it's just going to trial?

We made sure Tom Brady's emergency appeal got to a judge before the season started so he wouldn't miss any games.

Signed,
The Justice System

(Okay, so that was a civil case and this is a criminal, but it still shows our priorities are messed up)

Or did he, and it was deleted?

Because there were no pedestrians or cyclists involved here. Plus, I think that even Marrkkkkie would be hard pressed to come up with a way to justify somebody going over 2.5 times the posted speed limit on a road.
