The transit police don't enforce the no smoking rules or fare jumping rules so why should the customers.

rules about smoking and fare jumping when your police officers aren't actually in the stations to begin with.

Shout out to the victim for saying something. Smokers are a drag on our society, no pun intended.

...there was a guy who not only evaded the fare at the (unattended) inbound Symphony Station on the Green Line around 6:30 AM, but also proceeded to smoke on the platform. It was reported via the MBTA website and the next day, two undercover officers confronted him and issued citations carrying some very hefty fines.

I think it's pathetic that so many stations are regularly unattended, but it's some consolation that the MBTA does (or did) respond when informed of (at least some) problems.

Before everyone piles on smokers - a couple years back I was at the Lechmere bus stop around 10:30pm one lonely rainy night. It was pretty deserted, and nobody was near me and I was smoking a cigarette. A woman crossed the busway to come over to me and demand I stop smoking. I finished my drag and started to tell her I'd had a pretty bad day and could she cut me some slack. She responded by kicking me in the knee as I sat on the bus bench, and called me a c-cksucker. The few witnesses who were off to the other side did nothing.

Was it deserted or were there a few witnesses at the Lechmere bus stop?

To hunt down someone who is smoking nowhere near them and release all the frustration they have at life. They relish the chance and see it as a free pass. I'm sure we can get confirmation here.

From your sockpuppet, maybe.

I hate to be this guy but... you were still breaking the law. "I had a bad day" isn't really a valid defense.

That doesn't justify what the woman did, though.
