Red Line commute becomes a bear when train dies at Harvard Square

Plenty of space if you're going outbound from Davis. Photo by Mark Novak.

The Grim Reaper harvested a train at Harvard Square this morning and now hundreds of Red Line riders are stacking up like cordwood waiting for inbound trains that just aren't coming.

Meaghan O'Malley reports she got on at Davis at 7:30 a.m. and hadn't even reached Harvard by 7:57.

It started with a disabled train at Alewife at 7:20am which they didn't feel like announcing until around 7:40am on the MBTA website. Then while riding from Davis to Harvard, another train died at Harvard. Took 52 minutes to get from Davis to MGH and I was trapped like a sardine in a can for most of that time.

The announcements on my train at Harvard said there were 2 disabled trains--1 at Alewife and 1 at Harvard going south. Seems to me the whole system is going south.

There was a runor that Trump had a wall built at Davis, but that was not confirmed.

Until the Queen Bees who run this state support their worker bees who are late for work every day and demand that their workers deserve better transportation options. Otherwise the low paid drones will fly away to another state where getting to and from work is cheaper and less stressful.

The new trains are on order. The fault lies with previous administrations for kicking the can and not ordering new trains when the old ones had exceeded their lifespan.

Since it takes 4-5 years to order more trains and have them delivered this is when Baker should be looking ahead to the next fleet which will need replacement in early 2020s. I'm not holding my breath.

To any riders that rely on the red line to get to work/school on time.

...until the outbound side of the platform is jammed, too!

Just remember folks, the service cuts are coming. Get ready to be thankful for what little we have.

Why the bike cage had so many spots this morning.

Probably another one of those situations where delays are announced on a pretty day and a steady stream of helmet-carrying riders heads up the escalators. I did that one time and rode in a pack all the way through Somerville and Cambridge, only to find that the rotting powerless hulk was still blocking the line at Charles.

All sympathies to those who don't have such options.

I was on the Train from Heck. The Train from Hell is the one that died, not AT Alewife, but about 50 feet into the tunnel, according to the woman who ended up sitting next to me on the Train from Heck (after they finally decided to drag the Train from Hell back to Alewife, unload all those people and load them into the Train from Heck). Then at Davis a heavy smoker sat next to me on the other side, and I got to sit next to him as he got his withdrawal jitters for half an hour between Porter and Harvard. I did wonder at what point people would start to pass out due to lack of air...not a very comforting thought. Do you suppose they have any standard for "time to get these people off this damn train however we do it"?
